The single has an eerie new wave feel, heavy with synthesizers and vintage drum machine sounds. The track was premiered worldwide by Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio on the 4th of December, 2017.
A music video starring Tommy Wiseau was unveiled alongside the release of The Neighbourhood on March the 9th, 2018.
Tommy Wiseau stars in the retro music video. Frontman Jesse Rutherford had this to say about working with him during an interview with PopBuzz:
"I could have never done what he did in the video. His role… he killed it. He was such a joy to work with, he’s the best. Yeah, he was great. He is exactly what you think he is going to be. That’s really how he is. But he’s sweet and he has cool opinions and we had great conversations. Yeah, it was cool."
Mikey Margott, the bass guitarist, portrayed the diner’s chef in order to fulfill his second love.
Promoted as a short film, the music video for “Scary Love” is based on classic science fiction and cyberpunk movies.

The Neighbourhood's song Scary Love is about falling in love with someone who cares for you deeply and intensely.
