1) The Nelsons have been formed in Tuebingen, Germany in 2006 by the three brothers (in rock & roll) Randy Riot Nelson (guitar and vocals), Simon Nelson (bass) and Andy Nelson (drums). After a few rehearsals the band had written enough songs to play a solid punk rock show and ever since then the Nelsons play in every place that provides enough room for their instruments and some bottles of beer.

By 2008 the band had recorded two demos (combined within the EP Demolition, Baby!) and by the end of 2008 Julia Nelson joined the trio and became the new lead singer. With this constellation the Nelsons went about recording a 12-track album in December 2009. However, since Julia dropped out of the band a few months after the recordings were finished, six songs of the original recordings were re-recorded with Randy as lead singer. Those songs now form the EP Riot, Baby! which is available for download at http://thenelsons.bandcamp.com.

The Nelsons are still around and working on their goal to play in every club, bar and basement in Germany at least once. Current show dates are announced on the official website www.the-nelsons.de as well as on myspace and facebook.

This was a great band to watch live during my time at Texas Tech. My older brother told me about them and we actually had The Nelsons come to San Antonio to play our Senior Prom at Clark High School in 1987. Rest in peace Donnie, thanks for the great music! MTK

This video actually got considerable play in music video themed dance clubs in the mid 1980s. It was played a lot at the Skyline Video Nightclub in Appleton, Wis. I frequented that place a lot on Friday and Saturday nights.

RIP Donnie. I saw these guys play a lot of frat parties and bars at Tech back in the early 80s. Bass player in those days and in this video was a guy named Dennis Jones, from El Paso, who left the band not long after the MTV Basement Tapes thing.

If I remember correctly, this was an MTV "Basement Tapes" winner. (Basement Tapes was a competition program from the early 80s where indie bands sent in their self-made videos. Guadalcanal Diary was another entrant.)

I grew up with these guys, That's Donnie Allison on lead vocals. A lot of this was filmed at Monterey High School. This the Band Donnie was in after Impeccable. I wonder if anyone can name the rest of the band or the other bass player Eddie....

I mixed the "Bag Your Face" album (which this is from) and did the post-production audio for this video at Omega Audio in Dallas, TX. The guys came in for 3 days. One day to do overdubs and the other two days to mix the album. This video was shot by, I believe, Ken Mandel and edited at Video Post & Transfer, which we were located next to, at Dallas Love Field in the old Braniff terminal. As someone noted, it was a winner in one of MTV's Basement Tapes shows. Fun memories!!

Ken indeed did the cinematography and editing. He landed a record-breaking number of videos that he directed on the "Basement Tapes" show -- including one, Kim & Callahan's "Cadillac," that ended up competing against The Nelsons in finals (they both lost), but he didn't direct this one. Steve Moss, who produced and directed (and was The Nelsons manager) landed a few of his own, including a finals win with 4 Reasons Unknown. Moss did another video for them off "Bag Your Face" -- "Sister Sister" -- but I've never seen it.

"You would think that the town that produced Buddy Holly would maintain at least a small power pop scene, but my semi-hometown of Lubbock, Texas (actually, I was born in Denver City, about a hundred miles away, a town that makes Jon's hometown of Pratt, KS look like Paris) has never had a particularly active local music presence despite being home to the rather huge campus of Texas Tech University. When I was attending high school in Lubbock, the Nelsons were pretty much IT when it came to decent local bands, but as far as the kids at Monterey High were concerned, they were full-on rock stars. Pretty much the only new wave-influenced band in Lubbock through the first half of the '80s, the Nelsons took a lot of cues from the likes of the Rezillos and the B-52's, producing a jumpy, herky-jerky take on new wave bubblegum that favored scratchy-scratchy guitars, a cheap organ and a goofy comic outlook. (Singer Donnie Allison's closing spoken-word rant is saved from total dorkiness only by the gleeful abandon with which he delivers it.) It worked, for a while, and the Nelsons actually flirted with mainstream success, winning one round of MTV's Basement Tapes contest (remember that? It was like a battle of the bands where a lot of local bands sent in really crappy homemade videos in and we all sat around and laughed at how awful they were) with a deeply silly video for this very song. But then Ricky Nelson died and the Nelsons changed their name out of respect when they found out that his twin sons Gunnar and Matthew were using it in L.A. Only problem was, they changed their name to Unexplained Cattle Mutilations. Yeah, pretty much nobody ever heard from them again.

I honestly think this might be the worst song I have ever heard in my life. It may be tied with Billy Ocean’s “Get out of my dreams and into my car” and Lionel Ritchie’s, “Dancing on the Ceiling”. Actually, it may be worse than those two. It may also be the worst video I have ever endured.
