Fever
The Neville Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Never know how much I love you
Never know how much I care
When you put your arms around me
I get a fever that's so hard to bear

You give me fever when you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night

Ev'rybody's got the fever
That is something you all know
Fever isn't such a new thing
Fever started long ago

Sun lights up the daytime
Moon lights up the night
I light up when you call my name
And you know I'm gonna treat you right

You give me fever when you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night

Romeo loved Juliet
Juliet she felt the same
When he put his arms around her
He said, Julie baby, you're my flame

Thou givest fever when we kisseth
Fever with thy flaming youth
Fever, I'm afire
Fever, yea I burn forsooth

Captain Smith and Pocahontas
Had a very mad affair
When her daddy tried to kill him
She said Daddy-o don't you dare

He gives me fever with his kisses
Fever when he holds me tight
Fever, I'm his Missus,
Oh daddy, won't you treat him right

Now you've listened to my story
Here's the point that I have made
Cats were born to give chicks fever
Be it Fahrenheit or centigrade

They give you fever when you kiss them
Fever if you live and learn
Fever till you sizzle
What a lovely way to burn

What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn

Overall Meaning

The Neville Brothers' song Fever is a classic example of old-school R&B steeped in themes of love, passion and seduction. The opening line itself sets the tone of the entire song - "Never know how much I love you, never know how much I care" - suggesting that the singer might be holding back his true feelings for someone dear to him. The song is essentially a declaration of passion, with the singer describing how he feels a fever rising within him whenever his beloved embraces him. The singer describes the fever as "hard to bear", suggesting that it is both a physical and emotional manifestation of his love for his partner.

The song suggests that everybody experiences this fever, and that it is a natural response to love and intimacy. The third verse of the song references Romeo and Juliet, the famous literary couple who epitomize the idea of passionate, burning love. The singer says that Romeo gave Juliet fever, and that his own passion for his partner is equally intense. The song even references the doomed real-life romantic relationship between Captain Smith and Pocahontas, with the singer describing how Pocahontas' father disapproved of their relationship, but she defied him because of her love for Smith.

Overall, Fever by The Neville Brothers is a soulful, passionate celebration of love and intimacy, and is sure to get listeners swaying to its catchy rhythm.

I think it was 1979--I was fortunate to be gigging full time as a young musician those days. On a rare Friday night I had off, I tuned in to Austin City Limits, and stumbled onto hearing these guys doing this song live. At the time I'd never heard of the Neville Brothers,--I'm a convert for life!!
