We bleed we laugh we burn we die we take
We couldn't hope for a better reaction from a thief
Who burns a whole through his mattress
Every time he falls asleep
Yea every time I fall asleep
Breathe it in
Breathe it in
Placebo
When his eyes show all of his shame
He's got a game to play
Like a liar up on a stage
He's got a game to play
Just to make him feel okay
I've never been in a knife fight
But I was raised in the ghetto
I stayed sheltered from the night life
But my brother said hello
Can you teach me to be a man
My dad he just doesn't know how to
Sitting alone in a room with the doors barred
Hoping that the kids don't see what are now scars
Thanks darkness you taught him so much
But you couldn't make him heartless
Taught him so much
But you couldn't take away the shame
Living everyday the same pain in his brain
Yea it's just the way it is
You can take life or conquer it
Even when everything is shit
You can cave in or bury it
Can't make us heartless
You can take anything from us
You can take everything from us
Can't make us heartless
You can take anything from us
You can take everything
Breathe it in
He hopes he'll never feel it again
Breathe it in
Placebo
The New Age's song "Placebo" is a poignant and thought-provoking track that explores the complexities of pain and the different ways people deal with it. The song opens with the lyrics "Forget about the light, forget the days, We bleed we laugh we burn we die we take, We couldn't hope for a better reaction from a thief, Who burns a hole through his mattress, Every time he falls asleep". These lyrics suggest that the singer is struggling with some sort of pain, but he is unsure of how to deal with it. He feels as though he is trapped in a cycle of suffering and does not know how to break free.
The chorus of the song is "Breathe it in, He hopes he'll never feel it again, Breathe it in, Placebo". This suggests that the singer is trying to use some sort of substance or activity to numb the pain he is feeling. The use of the word "placebo" implies that the singer knows that what he is doing may not be helping him, but it is better than feeling the pain.
The second verse talks about the singer's brother asking him to teach him to be a man. This implies that the singer may have grown up in a tough environment and feels as though he has had to become tough in order to survive. The verse ends with the poignant line "Living everyday the same pain in his brain, Yea it's just the way it is, You can take life or conquer it, Even when everything is shit, You can cave in or bury it". This suggests that even when everything is difficult, people have a choice in how they deal with it. They can either "cave in" to the pain or learn to "bury it" and move on.

4 years on this is still one of the best albums I own. Every time listen I to this album I end stopping whatever I’m doing and just listening.
Side note though when the band is going off and I’m bobbing/banging my head my two year old son joins me. And it’s awesome to see him enjoying the music. And daddy tends to be a little emotionally frayed after getting into this stuff. Hard not to feel the pain and the hope.

I discovered this band via the lead singer’s mom. What a world we live in
