Girl
The O.C. - Beck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw her, yeah I saw her with her black tongue tied
Round the roses
Fist pounding on a vending machine
Toy diamond ring stuck on her finger
With a noose she can hang from the sun
And put it out with her dark sunglasses
Walking crooked down the beach
She spits on the sand where their bones are bleaching
And I know I'm gonna steal her eye
She doesn't even know what's wrong
And I know I'm gonna make her die
Take her where her soul belongs
And I know I'm gonna steal her eye
Nothing that I wouldn't try

My sun-eyed girl
My sun-eyed girl

I saw her, yeah I saw her with her hands tied back
And her rags were burning
Crawling out from a land filled life
Scrawlin' her name upon the ceiling
Throw a coin in a fountain of dust
White noise, her ears are ringing
Got a ticket for a midnight hanging
Throw a bullet from a freight train leaving
And I know I'm gonna steal her eye
She doesn't even know what's wrong
And I know I'm gonna make her die
Take her where her soul belongs
And I know I'm gonna steal her eye
Nothing that I would not try

My sun-eyed girl

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Girl" by Beck tell the story of a mysterious, secretive woman who seems to be living life on her own terms. The first verse describes her as having a "black tongue tied" and "walking crooked down the beach." She appears to be simultaneously rebellious and disaffected, spitting on the sand as if she is disgusted with the world around her. The singer finds her both captivating and intimidating - he admits that he wants to "steal her eye" and make her his own, even if he doesn't know exactly what that means.

In the second verse, the woman is further fleshed out as someone who has been through hardship and adversity. She is described as having her "hands tied back" and wearing "rags" that are burning. Despite this, she seems to be determined to make her mark in the world, "scrawling her name upon the ceiling." The singer is still intrigued by her, even as she seems to be on the verge of self-destruction. He wants to take her "where her soul belongs," but it's not clear where that is - it could be a place of peace and contentment, or it could be a place of further chaos and darkness.

Throughout the song, there's a sense of both danger and possibility surrounding the girl in question. She's not someone to be trifled with, but she also represents a kind of freedom that the singer is drawn to. Ultimately, the lyrics leave many questions unanswered, but they create a vivid portrait of a complex and mysterious character.

I loved Anna. I wish there was a way that they could have kept her..Luke too. It's like, they made him a likable character and then wrote him off- ROOOONEY!!!

@__Mr.White__

Luke left? When? Couldn’t remember that.

@purpose6113

Yeah, luke should have been there all seasons

@BodaciousWickerman

I loved when Luke became nice! That episode with the Rooney gig especially! He became a good comical character. He should have stayed or at least appeared more often now and again in the later seasons.
