One thing that made the Supertones stand out in CCM was their embrace of secular music styles, even to the point of having the introductions of some songs by Metallica be put in their own songs. Examples included Metallica's cover of "Am I Evil?" in "Adonai", "Creeping Death" and "One" in their song "Supertones Strike Back", and "Damage, Inc" as the intro to "Fade Away".
Another aspect that made them stick out was their open attention to problems facing the church both culturally and doctrinally. Their songs encourage doctrinal (including Biblical) literacy and holding firmly to one's faith.
The band has gone through a number of lineup changes, and in 2004 it was announced that the Supertones would be breaking up. Their last show was at Biola University in La Mirada, California on October 7, 2005; fellow Christian rockers Bleach (in a reunion show) and John Davis also played.
In 2010 the Supertones reunited and are currently on tour, mostly playing festivals.

Chase The Sun
The O.C. Supertones Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
where we got spring and summer,
but we skip the winter.
Feel free to enter
the zone of the Supertones,
where late into the night we just
rock the microphone.
We lived inside the fault lines
Spendin' all our time
readin' books and writin' verses.
The earth started shakin'
from the noise we were makin'.
We emerged from the rubble,
OC was taken.
With the music and the message,
so we rock the verbs.
Still neutral as a nazi
so forget what you heard.
We never leave the cross behind,
we use it as our banner,
scripture the vernacular,
JESUS in the grammar.
Throw your hands up,
throw your hands up high!
Tear the roof off and pull down the sky!
Chase the sun back to California,
tears in my eyes.
Tell me where you're from,
the mighty West Side!
Let me continue
to lighten up the mood a little.
Never number one,
but never playin' second fiddle.
My thoughts are like a circle,
with JESUS in the middle.
Rhyme for a reason,
I don't rhyme to riddle.
High emotions like I'm yellin'
no need to be alarmed.
Supertones is what your smellin'.
If lovin' you's a crime,
then baby I'm a felon.
Where we go from here,
my people there's no tellin'…
Are you ready to go
when it's time to get
back on the road just to see you?
On this narrow path
we got no time to dally
Follow my lead
and chase the sun back to Cali.
Feel free to e-mail me and request any christian
rock, punk or ska songs. I have most of them.

The O.C. Supertones's song Chase The Sun uses energetic and vibrant lyrics to convey a message of a joyful and fulfilling life in California. The song starts with an inviting welcome to the epicenter of music and fun, where the sun shines year-round and the Supertones rule the scene. The band's love for music is evident as they rock the microphone all night, living underground where they read and write verses. However, the underground living is not confined as the noise and music they create eventually cause an earthquake, which they emerge from to take over Orange County with their music and message. Their message is rooted in scripture, with Jesus being the center of their rhymes, and the cross being their banner.
Throughout the song, the Supertones use their upbeat and engaging lyrics to inspire listeners to join them in their joyful journey. They ask listeners to throw their hands up high, tear the roof off, and chase the sun to California. The lyrics remind listeners that no matter where they're from, the mighty West Side welcomes them with open arms. The Supertones acknowledge that they may never be number one, but they refuse to play second fiddle. Instead, they focus on Jesus being in the middle of everything, rhyming with a purpose, never to be mistaken for riddling. They encourage listeners to follow their lead and chase the sun back to California, a place where they can be free to express themselves and thrive.
Overall, Chase The Sun is an upbeat and exhilarating song that is an ode to California's music scene, but also offers a deeper message of joy and fulfilment in Christ. The Supertones use their lyrics to inspire listeners to join them in their journey, where the sun never stops shining.
