Firmament
The Ocean Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And God said,
Let there be lights
In the firmament
Of the heaven.

Let there be lights in heaven to divide the day from the night;
And let them be for signs, for seasons and for days (and years);
And let them be for lights up there in the firmament
To give light upon the earth.

And it was so, and God made two, two great lights;
The greater light to rule the day,
And the lesser light to rule the night; the stars as well.
And God set them in the firmament
To give light upon the earth.

And to rule, to rule over the day and over the night
To divide darkness from the light.

Let there be
A firmament
In the midst
Of the waters.

(repeated)

And God said, let the waters bring forth, abundantly,
The moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly
Above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
...Or so do some people believe.

Above the earth in the open firmament
And to rule, to rule over the day and over the night
To divide darkness from the light.

Let there be
A firmament
In the midst
Of the waters.

(repeated)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Firmament by The Ocean reflect upon the creation of the universe as depicted in the book of Genesis. The chorus repeatedly refers to the creation of the firmament, a solid dome-like structure that some biblical scholars believe was created to separate the “waters above” from the “waters below”. The verses delve deeper into the creation story as God creates the stars, moon, and sun to provide light and to mark the passage of time. The song speaks of the lights in the heavens being a division of day and night, as well as a creation of signs and seasons. Finally, the lyrics mention the creation of life in the form of birds and sea creatures.

The song’s lyrics are open to interpretation, and it's likely that the band meant to explore the topic of belief in a higher power and the creation of the universe. However, the lyrics could also be interpreted as a metaphor for mankind's own search for meaning and purpose in the universe. Additionally, the mention of the “waters above” and “waters below” could point to the difficulty of understanding the universe beyond our physical world.

And God said,
Let there be light
In the firmament of the heaven.

Let there be light in heaven to divide the day from the night;
And let them be for signs, for seasons and for days, and years;
And let them be for lights the day in the firmament
To give a light upon the earth.

And it was so, and God made two, two great lights;

The lesser light to rule the night;
The stars as well.
And God set them in the firmament
To give a light upon the earth,

And to rule, to rule over the day and over the night
To divide the darkness from the light.

Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters
Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters

And God said,
Let the waters bring forth, abundantly, the moving creature that hath life,
And foul that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
...Or so do some people believe.

Above the earth in the open firmament...

And to rule, to rule over the day and over the night
To divide darkness from the light

Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters
Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters

This band has constantly been on my top 10 of all time, and along with He Is Legend, are the best bands very few are listening to.

@YetiLovesMetal Fates Warning, King's X, Disillusion, Hammers of Misfortune, Jacobs Dream, OSI, etc. There's always been a fair amount of prog on our roster and throughout our catalog of releases.

The world needs more bands like this. I've met everyone one of these guys personally in Indianapolis last November, and they are the nicest, most down-to-earth guys you could ever meet. Their music is complex, intelligent, and beautiful, and you just won't see anything like it, especially in the mainstream music world. I've listened to their albums more times than I can count, and I know I will never grow tired of hearing them. Long live The Ocean!

I've only been listening to The Ocean for a year or so, and they're already like my #4 most listened artist all time on Spotify. I can't get enough. Amazing and underrated band 🤘
