The Omega Experiment originally started as an auto-biographical concept idea by Dan in 2007. He wanted to tell the story of his life up to that point through music and lyrics, but it remained a fleeting idea until the resources available to realize the concept were presented. In the winter of 2009, Dan was busy writing instrumental solo material. His long-time friend and cousin Ryan Aldridge bought a keyboard, and the two started jamming out ideas, which Dan suggested would work with his concept. The same meanings are still present, but the duo now perceives the concept from a more general perspective, as not to alienate the listener.
The Omega Experiment's musical influences are vast and many. Some include: Devin Townsend, Pain of Salvation, Frost, Dream Theater, Styx, Rush, and Mike Patton.
