Chicken Train
The Ozark Mountain Daredevils Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chicken train
Runnin' all day
Chicken train
Runnin' all day
Chicken train
Runnin' all day
I can't get on
I can't get off
Chicken train take your chickens away

Laser beam
In my dream
Laser beam
In my dream
Laser beam
In my dream
I can't get on
I can't get off
Laser beam's like a sawed off dream

Chicken train
Runnin' all day
Chicken train
Runnin' all day
Chicken train
Runnin' all day
I can't get on

I can't get off
Chicken train take your chickens away, whew!

Overall Meaning

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' song Chicken Train is a surreal and whimsical take on the experience of feeling trapped and unable to escape. The repetitive refrain of "Chicken train, running all day" sets a frantic pace and creates a sense of urgency in the listener. The train is a metaphor for the obstacles that the singer feels are constantly in their way, and the chickens are a symbol of things that are beyond their control. The repeated lines "I can't get on, I can't get off" reinforce the idea of being stuck in a situation that feels endless and frustrating.

The addition of the Laser Beam verse adds to the dreamlike quality of the song. The laser beam is another symbol of something that feels both powerful and elusive. It cuts through the darkness of the dream world, but the singer is still unable to fully grasp it. The line "Laser beam's like a sawed off dream" suggests that this seemingly unattainable goal is just out of reach, like a dream that has been severed by a sharp blade.

Overall, Chicken Train is a unique and interesting song that uses surreal imagery to express feelings of confinement and powerlessness. It speaks to the universal experience of feeling like we are stuck on a never-ending train ride, with no control over where we are going or how we get there.

I introduced this song to a friend back in 1979 when I worked at a chemical plant, our job consisted of filling 55 gallon drums with various chemicals. One day my friend started drumming the tune of "Chicken Train" on empty 55 gal. drums while belting out the lyrics, by the end of the shift everyone in the department knew the song. To break the monotony of a work day, once in a while he would start drumming the tune and everyone would join in. Good times, good memories. Thank you mangeldeth74.
