The group was based on Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, but quickly created a unique sound, including, most notably, very bizarre lyrics. While Clinton, the leader of the group, made weekly trips to Detroit to produce for such groups as The Pets and Roy Handy, the Parliaments switched labels repeatedly, releasing several EPs, including Poor Willy/Party Boys (APT), Lonely Island/Cry For Flip (Golden World) and Heart Trouble/That Was My Girl (Golden World) without success. In 1967, the Parliaments released I Wanna Testify for Revilot, and song went to #3 R&B and #20 Pop on the Billboard Music Charts. This was followed by a dispute with Revilot in 1968, and Clinton's renaming of the group as Funkadelic (which was more in keeping with the musical direction of the group, funk, and integrated the popular genre of psychedelic music), composed of the backing band for the Parliaments, including Billy Bass Nelson. When Revilot declared bankruptcy, the Parliaments were sold to Atlantic Records, and Clinton abandoned doo-wop to avoid working for Atlantic. Funkadelic, and its soon created sister group, Parliament, soon became the legendary creators of funk.
In 1995, many of the old Parliaments tracks were released on Goldmine/Soul as the album Testifyin'.

Are asking me what's come over me
There's been a change (there's been a change)
And it's oh so plain to see
Love just walked in on me
And it's taken me by surprise
Happiness surrounds me
Now it was just a little while ago
My life was was incomplete
I was down so doggone low
Had to look up at my feet
Don't you know that
I just want to testify
What your love has done for me
I just want to testify
What your love has done for me
Once I was a hollow man
In which a lonely heart did dwell
You know love came creeping upon me
Bringing life to an empty shell
Now I heard so many times before
That your love could be so bad
I just want to tell you people
It's the best love I ever had
Don't you know that
I just want to testify
What your love has done for me
I just want to testify
What your love has done for me
Ooh, ooh luscious
Sure been delicious to me
Ooh, ooh luscious
Sure been delicious to me
I just want to testify
What your love has done for me
I just want to testify
What your love has done for me
The Parliaments' song Testify is about the transformative power of love on the singer's life. The opening lines of the song suggest that the singer's friends are surprised to see a change in him, indicating that the singer was previously unhappy, incomplete or perhaps even depressed. However, the arrival of love in the singer's life has brought about a noticeable change. The singer states that happiness now surrounds him and it is evident from the expression in his eyes. He also admits to being surprised by the arrival of love, which suggests that it was unexpected but welcomed.
The second verse of the song reveals that the singer had a lonely and hollow existence before the arrival of love. The singer uses empty shell as an analogy for his incomplete life. Love crept upon him and brought life to him, which implies that love has been a life-changing experience for the singer. The singer further states that he had always heard that love could be bad, but in his case, it has been the best love he has ever had. The song concludes with the singer using the phrase "Ooh, ooh luscious" to describe the sweetness and deliciousness of the love he has in his life.
Overall, the lyrics of Testify are about the transformative nature of love on a person's life. The arrival of love has brought joy, hope, and completeness to the singer's life, leading to a change in his demeanor and outlook.

I was a 13 yr old Catholic school girl when this came out. Loved it! Sure, we loved the Beatles, but also the Temptations and all of the girl groups. Ed Sullivan, Hullabaloo, American Bandstand we're how we learned to dance. And then Soul Train!
