Joy to the World
The Philadelphia Orchestra And Chorus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Joy to the World, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the Earth, the Savior reigns!
Let us their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,

And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love

Overall Meaning

"Joy to the World" is a classic and popular holiday song that was originally written by Isaac Watts in 1719, but the version we know today was arranged by Lowell Mason in 1839. The song is about spreading joy and happiness to everyone, including people and animals. The first verse introduces Jeremiah, a bullfrog who was a good friend of the singer, and whom the singer helped "drink his wine." This could be interpreted as a metaphor for enjoying life's simple pleasures with good company.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Joy to the world" four times, emphasizing the song's message of spreading joy and happiness to everyone. The second verse takes a political tone, with the singer saying that if they were the "king of the world," they would throw away things like cars, bars, and war, and instead make love to someone they care about. This verse could be interpreted as a call for peace, love, and a simpler way of life.

Overall, "Joy to the World" is a festive and upbeat song that encourages us to appreciate the good things in life and spread happiness to those around us.

I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying his channel. This is my favorite kind of Christmas music; I don't care for contemporary music that much. I also love to read the comments about the memories people have regarding each album. Merry Christmas!

By far the most magnificent traditional Christmas Album ever recorded! As a teenager I used to listen to this for hours, while decorating the tree, wrapping gifts preparing Christmas Dinner etc. What excuisite interpretations and arrangements by Maestro Eugene Ormandy known as the "Philadelphia Sound!" It isn't Christmas without 1962's The Glorious Sound of Christmas!! 🎄 🔔 🔔 ⛄ 🎶 🎵 🎻 🥁 🎺

Glad you enjoy. I think of this as the Star Wars (Williams) of Christmas Music.

We always played this album at Christmas. It's just beautiful! Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, and Percy Faith and his orchestra. Just wasn't Christmas without this great music.
