Cry
The Philosopher Kings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You don't know how to ease my pain
You don't know
You don't know how to ease my pain
Don't you hear any voices crying?

That's the sound of my love dying
Or is it the rain?
You don't know how to play the game
And you cheat, and you lie

You make me want to cry
You make me want to cry

You don't know what the sound is darling
That's the sound of my tears falling
Or is it the rain?
You don't know how to play this game
And you cheat, and you lie

You make me want to cry
You make me want to cry
You don't even know how to say goodbye
Ohhh-yeah

You don't even know how to say goodbye
You don't even know how to say goodbye
You don't know how to ease my pain
And you cheat, girl you lie
You make me girl

You make me want to cry
You don't even know how to say goodbye
You don't even know how to say goodbye
You make me want to

You make me want to
You make me want to cry

Overall Meaning

The Philosopher Kings' song "Cry" is a heart-wrenching ballad about the pain of a failed relationship. The singer addresses their partner, telling them that they don't know how to ease the pain they feel inside. The sounds of crying and tears falling are juxtaposed with possible rain, evoking a sense of desolation and loneliness. The partner is accused of cheating and lying, which adds to the singer's frustration and sadness. The chorus emphasizes the overwhelming feelings of sorrow and despair, and the inability to find release through tears.

The first verse of the song suggests a sense of desperation, with the singer questioning their partner's ability to recognize their pain. The use of the word "darling" in the second verse adds a layer of affection, which is paired with the realization that the relationship has failed. The final verse is particularly poignant, as the singer accuses their partner of not even knowing how to say goodbye, which makes the pain even worse.

I remember hearing this in '98, my first year as a teenager. I was born when the original came out, but was oblivious to the fact that this was a cover. To me, this was just a mind-bending original. To hear it now, it still hits hard.
