1. the pillows (ザ・ピロウズ) are an alternative rock band from Hokkaidō, Japan, best known outside Japan for their contributions to the soundtrack of the anime series FLCL (Fooly Cooly).
They consist of 山中さわお (Sawao Yamanaka) -vocals & guitar-, 真鍋吉明 (Yoshiaki Manabe) -guitar-, 佐藤シンイチロウ (Shinichiro Sato) -drums-.
The band officially formed on September 16, 1989 as a four-man group. The fourth man and original bassist, 上田ケンジ (Kenji Ueda), left the band in 1992 to become a music producer and do solo work. Since then, 鹿島達也 (Tatsuya Kashima) and later 鈴木淳 (Jun Suzuki) have taken his place as supporting bassists. Neither Kashima nor Suzuki have been named official members out of respect for Ueda.

The Pillows Lyrics

The lyrics to The Pillows' song "Liberty" seem to encapsulate the feeling of youthful energy and adventurous spirit. The first few lines describe the scene on a campus, under a wide open sky with infinite square windows. The sense of restlessness is palpable, as the singer asserts that they cannot stay still and ends up jumping onto a sandbag-free hot air balloon. The next lines speak of waiting in the gentle darkness hiding behind the afternoon sky, like a star, beckoning the listener to follow.
The song then takes a turn towards a rejection of traditional, structured methods of navigation or pathfinding. The idea that maps can be replaced by simple arrows, and that crossroads are meaningless in the larger scheme of things. Instead, the singer emphasizes intuition and feeling - even when the wind blows and hides things from view, it is important to keep chasing that fluttering flag, keep trembling with the desire to explore.
The final lines of the song refer to reaching out and grasping something that's been waiting in the sweet darkness, like two people facing each other. There is a message of empowerment here: if they can wait for that special moment, they can hold onto it tightly, and perhaps the singer can even invite the listener to go further and deeper together.
Overall, "Liberty" inspires a sense of freedom and possibility, and celebrates the courage to take the leap of faith and explore the unknown.
