The group was initiated by Jon Langford (also of the Waco Brothers and The Mekons) as a covers group, with a constantly shifting repertory and cast of backing members. The name was first used for Langford's 1995 album of Johnny Cash cover songs. In 1998, Langford enlisted the help of a number of prominent alt-country musicians (including Neko Case, Alejandro Escovedo, and Robbie Fulks) for a full-length tribute album to Bob Wills. Their second LP, The Executioner's Last Songs, was released in 2002 and is a collection of songs about death. Following this record's success, the group recorded two more albums of songs about death as benefits for the Illinois Coalition Against the Death Penalty. These albums featured such guests as Steve Earle and Mark Eitzel. The group rarely performs live, though it occasionally does special performances in the Chicago area. In 2007 the group appeared as backing band on Chumbawamba member Danbert Nobacon's solo album The Library Book of the World, as well as playing live with Nobacon.
Time Changes Everything

Our hearts beat as one while we had our fun but time changes everything
When you left me my poor heart was broken our romance seemed all in vain
I guess it was true for me and for you but time changes everything
[ guitar ]
You can change the words to an old song rearrange it and make it swing
I thought nothing could stop me from loving you but time changes everything
So goodluck to you may God bless you you'll go your way and I will go mine
There was a time when I thought of no other and we sang our own love's refrain
Our hearts beat as one while we had our fun but time changes everything
[ fiddle - piano - guitar - mandolin ]
There was a time when I thought of no other...
The Pine Valley Cosmonauts' Time Changes Everything is a soulful country song that speaks about the inevitability of changes that occur over time. The song tells the story of a rejected lover who once believed in the power of love as an unchanging force but learns the hard way that time changes everything. The first verse reminisces about a time of love and happiness when two people were united in harmony, singing their own love's refrain. However, as the chorus repeats, time changes everything, and the heartbroken lover is forced to accept the painful truth of lost love, realizing that their romance ceased to be.
The song's message is universal, as it captures the sadness of endings and the passage of time that can alter feelings and relationships. The guitar, piano, fiddle, and mandolin all work together to create an emotional and mournful sound that underscores the song's themes. The final verse wishes luck to the departing lover but acknowledges that the singer cannot promise to love again because of the unpredictable nature of life and time.
