Alone At Sea
The Pineapple Thief Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is our time, what's to live for?
This is our time, nothing more
Look to the sky, it cannot help you
It all melts away in our drug addled minds

Oh, who cares, who cares?
Oh, who cares, who cares?
Give me your hand and let's take it
Give me your hand and we'll dance to the end

Oh, who cares, who cares?
Oh, who cares what's on the other side?

Cause you and me, alone at sea
And I know we know this is suicide
And you can see it's you and me
So hold on, hold on to this suicide

Give me your hand and I'll take it
Give me your hand and let's dance to the end

Oh, who cares, who cares?
Oh, who cares what's on the other side?

Cause you and me alone at sea
And I know we know, this is suicide

And you can see it's you and me
So hold on, hold on to this suicide

Overall Meaning

The Pineapple Thief's song "Alone At Sea" captures the essence of a hedonistic and nihilistic outlook on life. The song seems to be addressing someone who is already in the depths of drug addiction and cherishing every moment of their escape from reality. "This is our time, what's to live for? This is our time, nothing more" suggests that this moment of their life is worth living for, and nothing else matters. The addiction is not only a form of escapism but also a journey towards an inevitable end. The lines "Cause you and me, alone at sea, and I know we know this is suicide" shows that the person is well aware of the risks of their addiction but chooses not to care.

The chorus of the song, "Oh, who cares, who cares?" repeats multiple times, indicating that the individual has reached a point where they have lost interest in anything else. The lines "Give me your hand and let's dance to the end" also suggest that the individual is ready to accept their fate and feels like they are dancing towards it. At the same time, the lines "Oh, who cares what's on the other side?" implies that the person has no interest in what lies beyond their current state of mind; they are content with living in the here and now, even if it may be leading to their destruction.

Overall, "Alone at Sea" is a bittersweet song that paints a bleak picture of addiction while simultaneously glamorizing it. It portrays the idea that life can be short, and therefore, it's better to make the most of the time one has, regardless of the consequences.

Honestly, the addition of Gavin Harrison is one of the best thing this band has ever done.
It represented a quality jump.

@Euphorion314

Totally agree! He's a beast! :D

@theliberation9061

They'd been great for a long time before. Gavin and Darran made things EVEN better, but TPT had been an amazing band in their own right for a long, long time before.

@TheAndresOpeth

The Liberation I never said they are not good. The Pineapple Thief is an outsranding band, but just listen to how complex the songs can become with this one great drum player such as Gavin.

@bradmoshpitt1275

He has a rather vivid way of using cymbals, compared to many others. As this video portrays.

@victr1994

Same happened to PT I guess if u have followed them. Steven Wilson is great no doubt about that but great dimension was added by Gavin which went unnoticed there.
