Versions of the Truth
The Pineapple Thief Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You caught me in the black light
There was no way out for us
I thought it'd be a matter of time
But you lost your head

I followed you but you were out of sight
I did everything I could to get you back into my light
It's not how I remember it
You sold me out before I had time
To fight
No it's not how I remember it
You cornered me
And knocked me out

If you follow me then I'll be out of sight
I'll never be the one who comes and crawls back in your light

It's not how I remember it | It's not how I remember it
You took control | You took control
And sold me out before I had time | And sold me out before I had time

You follow me but I am out of sight | You follow me but I am out of sight
I never wanted anyone else to fall into your light | I never wanted anyone else to fall into your light

It's not how I remember it. | It's not how I remember it.

If I had known what it's all about
Someone told me to work it out
I live in this frequency
A frequency just for me
Just scattered voices
Not one that I can say
Is close enough for me to make it out
No words that I can care about
This is a world of silence
This is a world where you are safe
Yeah I am lost in this frequency
It's a frequency just for me
I hear no voices
Not the ones that I betrayed.

You follow me but I am out of sight
(yeah I'm out of sight)
I never wanted anyone else to fall into my light

You caught me in the black light
There was one way out for you

I knocked you out
Is that how you remember it?

Overall Meaning

In "Versions of the Truth," The Pineapple Thief present a story of betrayal and isolation. The first verse sees the singer caught in the "black light" with no escape, waiting for an eventual resolution. But to their surprise, the person they were with loses their head and leaves. The second verse reveals that this wasn't how the singer remembered it; their former companion had sold them out before they had a chance to fight back. The recurring line "It's not how I remember it" highlights the unreliability of memory and the conflicting perspectives we can have in relationships.

The chorus shifts the focus to the present, with the singer determined not to be pulled back into their former companion's sphere of influence. They vow to stay out of sight and not let anyone else fall into their light. The second half of the song shifts again to a more personal perspective, with the singer lost in their own "frequency," isolated and disconnected from the world. The contrast between the cliquish, possibly toxic relationship of the first half and the loneliness of the second half is striking.

This band is a masterclass in songwriting. Everyone is absolutely on top of their game.
Every single layer is so perfect, minimal and enriching and suits the song so well.
Of course, Gavin's playing is as masterful as always, but Bruce's writing is so tasteful and purposeful, plus his production is off the charts as well. Crystal clear. Really excited for the album.

Federico Mur

Gavin absolutely killed it, i'm amazed of how far he can go with his creativity. Keep making music, art is truth

Mario Lafrance

Gavin is the new Bill (Bruford) !!!

stephan telm

This is TPT, not the Gavin Harrison Band

Tomislav Erdelić

@stephan telm sure, that is true...but just like PT, TPT were nowhere near this level without Gavin.

Aeynos Arturii

The production on this song is amazing. Everything is clear, the mood seamlessly changes as the tempo shifts up and down. I love how the dissonance keeps you hanging for longer than you expect. It makes you hope for resolution and they do resolve into a fantastic jam, but make you work for it emotionally. Pure bliss to listen to.

Steve Johnson

Transcends ordinary Prog-rock. Simultaneously spiritual and grounded. Rhythms and counter rhythms build through the narrative with expert execution. Once again, great stuff.

GetTheYayo

Bruce has such a haunting voice, perfect for this music. Love his guitar work too, full of nuances and beautiful effects!

Utkarsh Kumar

The guitars on The Pineapple Thief's new songs have been amazing and Gavin's playing also seems quite different from their previous songs as if he's giving more space to other instruments and vocals to shine.
