Always thought this song was about someone Transitioning, Passing On! Think I was in 7th grade when this came out. When this song would come on I would just listen to the words, Gladys intense emotional vocal delivery and the pips Awesome 3 part harmony always blew me away. And the music, part country, part blues, part gospel, part R&B. I don't know why, but my eyes would well up with tears, never let anybody see it thought...lol. Don't know why , it just would happen. Much love to the writer of this song, I think I heard he's passed on. I do know he was mostly if not 100% a country songwriter, as in Country/Western as they used to call it. But Gladys and the pips made his songs Universal for All Listeners. And I believe this album was Gladys & the pips greatest success in the business. My father or someone had the 8 track and I didn't like "Midnight Train..." , thought it was an old folks song, but my dad (Who was from Georgia) loved it to death. I love Midnight Train.. now. It's Gladys vocals... Awesome! And when most her age lose a step vocally, she still has it...A God given Talent!
