Sweet Love on my Mind
The Pirates Lyrics

Well, I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
If you really gonna leave me let me love you just one more time
Well, you know I love you baby, I need your lovin' bad
Well give me some sweet love right this minute or you're gonna make me mad
I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well you love me, then you leave me and I cry the whole night through
Yeah you love me, then you leave me and I don't know what to do
I need your little ol' arms around me to hold and squeeze me tight
But you just love and leave me gal and you know that that ain't right
I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind

I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well now won't you love me baby and I know I don't lose my mind
Well, you know I love you honey, but you don't treat me right
Better give me just a little bit of your sweet lovin'
or we're gonna have a big fight
I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind
Well the river looks cold and the bottom is a long way down
If you really gonna leave me, that's where I'm gonna be found
When the mailman comes in the morning, there's a note upon my door

Just bring my mail to the bottom of the river, I don't live here no more
I'm a man who's got nothing but sweet love on my mind

Overall Meaning

The Pirates' song "Sweet Love on my Mind" is a classic blues-rock piece that is emblematic of the 1950s rockabilly era. The song highlights a man's struggle with the frustration of loving and being left behind by his partner, who he desperately wants to hold and be with. The man is begging his partner for one last session of love before she leaves him. He pleads with her not to leave him, saying he has nothing but sweet love on his mind.

The lyrics of the song reveal a man who is consumed by love, whose life revolves around his partner. His intense feelings are portrayed in the desperate lines "If you really gonna leave me let me love you just one more time" and "Well give me some sweet love right this minute or you're gonna make me mad." The man also reveals his hurt and confusion when his partner leaves him, lamenting "you love me, then you leave me and I don't know what to do," and "you just love and leave me girl and you know that that ain't right."

The song's sentiment of desperation and longing for love is made even more poignant when the man threatens to end his life if his partner leaves him. This desperation is evident in the lyrics "Well, the river looks cold and the bottom is a long way down/ If you really gonna leave me, that's where I'm gonna be found" and "Just bring my mail to the bottom of the river, I don't live here no more."

Saw the Pirates a few times in the 60's. Best rhythm section ever!! They were a 'power trio' before anybody knew what a 'power trio' was!! Prefered Mick's tone when he used a Gibson LP Junior though but still some impressive Telecaster licks here. Love it!

Tim Chapple

Just love it!
