Every Breath You Take
The Police & Henry Mancini Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take, I'll be watching you
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay, I'll be watching you

Oh, can't you see you belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take
Every move you make, every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying, "Baby, baby, please"

Oh, can't you see you belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take

Every move you make and every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you
Every move you make, every step you take, I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you
Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take (I'll be watching you)
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay (I'll be watching you)
Every move you make, every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake (I'll be watching you)
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay (I'll be watching you)

Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take (I'll be watching you)
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay (I'll be watching you)
Every move you make, every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake (I'll be watching you)

Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay (I'll be watching you)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Every Breath You Take" may appear to be a straightforward love song at first glance, but the underlying message of the song is quite sinister. The singer in the song is one who is obsessively watching and monitoring the person they are singing about. They watch every breath they take, every move they make, and every step they take. They listen to every word they say, and watch every game they play. The singer seems to be stalking the object of their desire.

The lyrics suggest that the singer feels a sense of ownership over the person they are singing about. They repeatedly emphasise that this person belongs to them. The singer is so obsessed with their subject that they cannot replace them and dream about them at night. The singer is desperate for their attention and pleas with them to stay with them. The song expresses the theme of one-sided love, unhealthy obsession and stalking.

This scene was amazing. There is no show on earth that seems to be able to compete

+Donna Graham - Check out The Wire. A bit different, but nonetheless brilliant.

@caprani0203

Yeah, I have watched the wire. A very good show, did thouroughly enjoy it.

@LetsGoPens97

True detective season one comes close

@chrisdalechapel

Check out The Bill

@REDEEMERWOLF

Mr. Robot. A completely different genre, but the cinematography is simply the best on television. Very modern content, but it's a very (post) modern show so it's probably not for everyone but I implore TV and Film enthusiasts to give it a look.

Mr. Robot also contains a lot of the misanthropic and nihilistic philosophy that The Sopranos revels in now that I think about it.

Sopranos writing is unmatched however. The only thing that comes close in my opinion is Better Call Saul and The Wire.
