Neptune
The Poozies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Neptune, I think I'm in love with the sea
How do I woo you and make you love me
I'm drenched by your passion
Enthralled by your anger
Becalmed by your beauty
How do I make you love me?

But when he spoke, it was a plea not a roar
If you want my love, then go and tell them all:

Don't oil my beaches, don't slaughter my whales
Don't cross me with diesel, cross me with sail
Give me some time to heal up my wounds
Give me more poison and I will die soon.

Neptune I don't understand what you fear
Here round my island the waters are clear
I live from your riches, your birds and your fishes
I never would choke you, what do you need from me here?

But then he spoke of all the change caused by me
Your damage seems small, but let me recall

That in your grandfather's day there ran salmon
You could walk on their backs
Now what's left of great shoals
Those that slip through the cracks
Now the salmon's in cages, gorged on fishmeal
Sucked from some other sea by cruel profiteers, so...

Don't oil my beaches, don't slaughter my whales
Don't cross me with diesel, cross me with sail

Give me some time to heal up my wounds
Give me more poison and I will die soon.

Overall Meaning

The Poozies’s Neptune is a song about a person’s love and admiration for the sea, personified by the Roman god of the sea, Neptune. The lyrics express the person’s desire to connect with Neptune and earn his love, while portraying Neptune’s anger and pain at the ongoing environmental destruction caused by humans. The first verse describes the person’s fascination with Neptune, finding themselves absorbed by his beauty and passion, yet acknowledges their inability to understand and connect with him. The second verse reflects Neptune’s disappointment and frustration with humanity’s destructive actions. He implores them to stop harming his habitat, from oil spills that smear his beaches, to hunting down his whales, to polluting his waters with diesel. Neptune pleads with humans to switch to using wind-powered sails instead of diesel engines, to allow the sea time to repair its wounds caused by human beings.

The chorus repeats Neptune’s call for people to cease their harmful interactions with the sea, giving it the chance to recover. The final verse reiterates Neptune’s sorrow for the loss of sea creatures from large shoals of salmon to the capture of wildlife in cages, drained of their own food from faraway waters. The song concludes with a final plea to not let the destruction continue, to let the ocean heal, or else risk losing him entirely. The lyrics are a poignant message to people that our actions have consequences and that we need to take care of our planet, including its oceans and seas, before it is too late.

This song is beautiful and is a great vehicle for Kate Rusby's unusual voice.

@Chris-qt5cb

I bought this cd when it was being played in an outlet in Croydon. I forget the name. But they were playing it and I asked for it. And it's only now all these 100s of years later that as I listen to it again because of some dislodged menu that I understand Kaye Rusby is singing. I'd never heard of her all those years ago. What does age time and chance do? Well I'm going to see her in December. :D

Thumbs up if you are from ISP.
