The band released their self-titled first album in March 1995 via PopLlama Records. After they garnered massive acclaim, Columbia Records quickly signed them. The album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and has shipped over three million copies. The RIAA has certified it as triple platinum. Songs "Peaches", "Kitty", "Lump", and "Dune Buggy" received major airplay.
Their 1996 follow-up album, "II", did not reach the same acclaim, though it reached the top forty on the Billboard 2000. Single "Mach 5" also garnered some airplay. The band then fell of the radar for many listeners, dropped by their major label. However, their albums of the new millennium, 'Freaked Out and Small' followed by 'Love Everybody' and 'These Are the Good Times People' (released in 2000, 2004, and 2008, respectively), picked up positive critical reviews, such as from the All Music Guide. Although their touring schedule became more sporadic into the 00s and 10s, they continue to perform and satisfy audiences with their off-beat humor and catchy hooks.
Jupiter
The Presidents of the United States of America Lyrics

A million molecules make it warm and a star is born, hmm
And the star had some sons and daughters
Some with some without water
Some cool and some run hotter
We blast an astronaut through the gasses
And do our best to save their little asses
Hello from inside a cloud
The particle smasher is maxing out
And it's smelly and loud
[Chorus:]
Jupiter, Jupiter: massive passive ball
Jupiter, Jupiter: or-or-orbital
Jupiter, Jupiter: mass of gas and dammit
Jupiter, Jupiter: is pure, pure, pure, pure planet
It's pure planet
It's pure planet
It's pure planet
Flying by in a perfect location
Billions of Earths worth of exploration
Or just a space gas station, I don't know
From deep below the surface
The tiny lifeforms are getting nervous
Hope it doesn't hurt us walking on the slimy surface
We lost contact with home base
On the dark side of this place
Please, send more human race
To fill the empty space
[Chorus]
It's pure planet, yeah
The song "Jupiter" by The Presidents of the United States of America is a lighthearted and whimsical tribute to the largest planet in our solar system. The lyrics describe imagined missions and adventures on and around Jupiter, from sending probes through storms to exploring below the surface and encountering slimy lifeforms. The song also references the scientific and astronomical properties of the planet, such as its mass and composition.
One interesting aspect of the song is the use of playful and humorous language, such as the line "Some cool and some run hotter" to describe Jupiter's children, and the repeated exclamation of "pure planet" as a play on words. This lightness and humor fits with the band's overall style and adds to the fun and imaginative tone of the song.
Another notable feature of "Jupiter" is the use of unique instrumentation, including a cigar box guitar, washtub bass, and other DIY instruments. This DIY approach to music-making was a hallmark of The Presidents of the United States of America's sound and helped them stand out in the alternative rock genre of the 1990s.
