My City Was Gone
The Pretenders Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went back to Ohio
But my city was gone
There was no train station
There was no downtown
South Howard had disappeared
All my favorite places
My city had been pulled down
Reduced to parking spaces
A, o, way to go Ohio

Well I went back to Ohio
But my family was gone
I stood on the back porch
There was nobody home
I was stunned and amazed
My childhood memories
Slowly swirled past
Like the wind through the trees
A, o, oh way to go Ohio

I went back to Ohio
But my pretty countryside
Had been paved down the middle
By a government that had no pride
The farms of Ohio
Had been replaced by shopping malls
And Muzak filled the air

From Seneca to Cuyahoga falls
Said, a, o, oh way to go Ohio

Overall Meaning

The Pretenders' song "My City Was Gone" is a lament for the loss of native landscapes and hometown memories from the lead singer, Chrissie Hynde perspective. The song was officially released in 1982 as part of their Learning to Crawl album. The song is a nostalgic ode to Ohio, particularly Akron – where Chrissie grew up, though it also chronicles her dismay and surprise at the significant change that occurred in the city over the years.

The opening verse uses imagery to describe how everything that Chrissie cherished about her hometown of Akron had vanished. She finds the place unrecognizable- the train station, downtown, South Howard Avenue are all wiped out, and her favorite places have disappeared, replaced with parking lots. The chorus, “a, o, way to go Ohio,” expresses her sadness and regret about the condition of her hometown.

The second verse is about Chrissie's family's absence - they've left, and there's nobody left to greet her when she returns to her childhood home. The lyrics describe her as being "stunned and amazed" by how everything's changed – she feels like she's coming back to a stranger's house. Her childhood memories swirl slowly past her like a wind through the trees.

The final verse describes the consequences of uncontrolled development and urbanization in Chrissie's homestate. The pretty countryside she remembers is now gone, paved down the middle by a government that has no pride. The farmland began to vanish, swallowed up by commercial development and shopping malls. The last line, “said, a, o, oh way to go Ohio," represents Chrissie's resignation to the situation.
