Detroit's female quartet created in 1959 by Florence Ballard, as sister group to The Primes. Ballard, Mary Wilson, Betty Travis and Diana Ross, wanted to record for Motown Records, but after an audition Berry Gordy sent the teenagers back to school. The girls persisted, singing in special events, talent contest, record hops and the occasional night club; sang background vocals for Al Garner, and released a single on Lu Pine Records: "Pretty Baby", led by Wilson; and "Tears of Sorrow", by Ross. Eventually Travis left, Barbara Martin replaced her, and in 1961 they were signed to Motown. Martin left after the first single was released, when the group became the trio The Supremes.

Mary was actually the first lead singer and she could turn heads! I've always loved Mary and always will. Flo, on the other hand, showed no mercy with Sam Cooke's "Good News". All three of these ladies were lead singers, even while in the background. One of Diana's greatest early vocals for me was "Your Heart Belongs To Me". Brian Holland later used her lower register for "Where Did Our Love Go", which was why I didn't recognize them right away on that one.

Agreed. Supremes could have done so much more, since they had three lead singers, and if they had added Cindy intstead of kicking out Flo we would have had four leading ladies. If I ran Motown or managed the girls, things would be different I can tell you. I might not make anywhere near as much as Gordy as the man is cutthroat as the day is long but there's no denying he put Motown on the map, but damn would I have loved the chance to really develop the talents and nurture the potential of Mary, Cindy, Flo and Diana: get them lessons in composing their own lyrics and melodies, have them learn instruments, give each girl a shot in the lead role.... then I would have added a fifth leading lady in Miss Jean Terrell. I think the reason why some people dismiss the Supremes contributions to music despite playing such a pivotol role in the Sixties is because they were a girlband: they were not given the chance to play instruments or write their own music, which I think is a crying shame. Florence and Diana co-wrote Tears of Sorrow with someone else, and Flo was actually writing song lyrics of her own by the time she was kicked out: Diana and Mary liked her songs but Gordy told her her lyrics were nothing. Shame, I would have LOVED to hear a song the girls wrote together themselves.

This is easily one of the best early songs from the Supremes. You can hear the raw power and talent and potential in all their voices, and it's nice to get to hear Mary sing lead: she has the deepest voice of the original three Supremes, but it has a very ethereal quality to it. I think one way the potential of the Supremes was squandered by Barry's lack of creativity and shortsightedness was how eerily well Flo, Mary and Diana harmonised with each other, no matter which voice was dominant. By switching the leads around a bit more, we would have not only gotten to see Mary and Flo shine more, but we would have seen each girl's uncanny and exquisite ability to harmonise with each other, and allowed another aspect of Diana's talent, that of a choir/chorus/backup singer to be prominent as well. I also think having more songs when all three girls sang in lead together would have been excellent, Manhattan (with Flo and Diana sharing lead) and Heartbreaking Guy (all three girls take a turn singing lead) are two standout tracks in the Supremes catalogue.

Great analysis. And further proof is the 1965 or so performance of the song People, where Flo had a lead for a bit of the song. And then it was taken away from her and given to DR.

There was true gold in all three women called the Supremes. But Berry Gordy was always going after the fool’s gold (i.e., is it good for business? or is it good for DR?) and he ruined The Supremes as a group and he destroyed Florence Ballard.

This is not bad at all. You hardly know that Diana Ross is even singing on this record. Florence and Mary are featured predominately on this song and Diana is singing background with the 4th Supreme whoever that was at the time. This example shows that Mary and Florence should have done more on the later albums even if they sang only one or two versus each and allowed Diana to carry the rest of the song. That is why I think one of the best things they did as a group was the Rogers and Hart song "Falling in Love With Love" which showcased Mary and Florence quite well while still allowing Diana to carry the song.

I like the rawness of this recording. I wish they'd redone it with a little polish to make it more marketable because the hit potential of the song is clear to me. They convey the emotions of lovesick young girls, especially 16-year-old Mary Wilson on a rare lead vocal on a 1960s song with the Primettes/Supremes, and that quality needed no alteration.

She had a smoothness in her voice something Diana had to work at, but it would take years for Mary to prove she is a very good singer and I love her for never giving up her dream. She went through loads of crap but she came out on top, hitless but none the less she's still doing what she loves. Too bad Florence gave up after hitting so many brick walls in her life.

Those girls were all so talented, in the beginning pains were taken to give them all equal shots at singing lead on records. They were nice girls keep them happy. Everybody except the 4th-best singer of them; Diana would later incorporate knee-pad politics into the mix to become the sole lead singer.

I agree with you one thing: Mary does sound good (you cant miss her on Where Did Our Love Go) & the also do sound very mature for young girls; but you failed to mention is that Diana was always the first in the studio & the last to leave. People always criticize Diana but she was the one that always brought her A-game to work; the other's didnt (including most of Motown's singer's) but they were teenagers. Diana graduated @ 16 yrs old when Berry wound't sign them because they were in school

In my opinion, Mary sounds better than Diane AND Flo in the early recordings. I can barely tolerant Diane's voice in Tears of Sorrow. Think of a lot of popular songs from the late late 50s and early 60s - Mary has that sound that was popular and selling records at that time.

They each had beautiful voices that made a perfect harmony. Diana had that sweet nasal sound (not always attractive), Mary had that deep, sultry sound, Flo gave the heart and soul. Together they were perfect. Diana sounded perfect on songs such as Breathtaking Guy, but not so great on songs such as I want a Guy. Some of those early songs should've had Mary or Flo on lead, but as we all know, Berry had his claws into Diana and wanted to make her a star.

I love the Supremes, but I have such bitter feelings toward Diana Ross that I don't want to hear her voice or ever see her face. She and Berry threw Flo into the street like a bag of trash. This was an incredible injustice to Flo, a sensitive and soulful heart. She should have been the lead in the first place, she was a genuine heart. Her singing voice was far far better than Diana. Only Florence quit school the others carried on. Barbera dropped out to start a family with the man she loved and she's still with him to this day. The nasty Mr Gordon used Flo not finishing her school to score digs and undermine her fragile confidence, along with horrible remarks about her weight. However on one occasion, Diana had obviously had enough of this and snapped back at him when he made yet another comment about Flo not finishing high school and said "So what? Neither did you!"

That shut him up for a little bit. Mr Gordon ain't nothing but a slimy corporate devil and a common thief. Diana was too good for him, as were all the girls. He ran that house of dreams like a sweatshop.

I disagree. You can fault Diana for many things in the breakdown of the original lineup, but she worked damn hard at what she did: she went from being a "secretary who thought she could sing" and singing through her nose to becoming one of the greatest divas of her generation. Diana worked herself to near exhaustion and ended up with anorexia and insomnia as a result, Gordy worked all his artists like slaves, and Diana in particular as he had pinned on her as his star. There was a year when none of the Supremes got a holiday, and it was not unusual to work a three solid months recording, performing or on the Motown revue and not be paid a single penny. Gordy exploited Diana just as he did his other artists: it's lucky she hit the bigtime as his favoured act, otherwise she'd probably be struggling in poverty to feed her family, as was the case with many a Motown legend once they started getting funny ideas about amending contracts and how much of their money they were actually entitled to or Berry was simply had no further use for them. Sure some of her methods were underhanded as hell like copying Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles outfits and wearing them before they came onstage (there's a reason why Patti Labelle spent four decades wanting to beat Diana's skinny ass), but ultimately? I admire the shit out of Diana Ross for her ambition, work ethic and her lifelong pursuit of musical excellence. Florence will always by my Supreme Supreme, but there will always be a special place in my heart for Miss Ross. I love the shit out of that woman and her voice.

I'm adding that Diana and Berry didn't start seeing each other intimately until after the group had had 5 consecutive number 1s, in 1965. All the claptrap people say about Diana only being made lead singer because she was sleeping with Berry is incredible inaccurate. She sang lead since 1962, two whole years before they had their first number 1. She became the main attraction because she had star quality, and it was her work ethic that put her there.
