Outsider
The Queenstons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You feel like a stranger to me
But I like that a little
I think
I'm not so sure
I don't know
I don't care

I'm an outsider for you
Shield your eyes
I'll make it lighter for you
Tonight

You feel like a stranger to me
But I like that a little
I think
I'm not so sure
I don't know
I don't care

I'm an outsider for you
Shield your eyes

I'll make it lighter for you
Tonight

Overall Meaning

The Queenstons's song "Outsider" is a complex and enigmatic journey into the psyche of someone who feels disconnected from the world around them. The repeated refrain of "You feel like a stranger to me, but I like that a little" hints at a sense of disconnection, as though the singer does not quite fit into the social norms of their surroundings. However, the addition of the lines "I think, I'm not so sure, I don't know, I don't care" suggest a conflict within the singer, who may simultaneously desire connection and reject it.

The chorus, with its repetition of "I'm an outsider for you, shield your eyes, I'll make it lighter for you tonight" compounds this sense of disconnect, suggesting that the singer is aware of their outsider status, and may even enjoy it to a certain extent. The idea of "shielding your eyes" hints at a desire to protect others from the singer's more destructive tendencies, while "making it lighter" suggests a desire to alleviate the heaviness of their own isolation.

Overall, the song presents a complex and challenging view of what it means to be an outsider, exploring both the pain and pleasure of disconnection from society. Through its repetition of key phrases and use of atmospheric soundscapes, the song creates an otherworldly atmosphere which draws the listener into the singer's world.

It’s crazy how life has changed since I first discovered this song. I always come back to listen to it to make sure I’m the same young dude inside, despite the adult life trying to break me everyday

Damn same problem dude

I wish the newer stuff still had these emotions.

Forever Fields
I’m partially with you there. The new material within Halley Labs Associates still has a lot of emotion within it I think, but I think they have a hard time putting it into words anymore. It’s all boiled down to complex soundscapes, fluctuations, come-and-go passages. Feels almost as though it’s just meant to be interpreted by the creator themselves first and foremost. The days of The Queestons music though will always have a lasting place in my memory, though, because wow, Outsider in particular hits hard.
