Misery
The Rains Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

At night I see your face from afar
Haunted by thy ghosts of your mind
At night, I simply wonder why
How much suffering you faced Β when took you for "awhile"…  Β and still you drown..
Β
The water of those bad tongues, the salt in your eyes
Both took you by the storm , tempted by a better life
and still you drown..
and still you drown"
….."I can't remember the person you been, can't accept what I see, sometimes when I pass by your home it brings me back to those years, before innocence gone, before they took you with that cursed storm, within your mind"
Β
As the days go by I see you walk away…
Β
its the green light you gave them to wash your brain.. with lies… promised to clean your mind, it makes me scared, and sometimes, makes me cry
Misery rain, where your soul is lain, where they took you deeper, down, used your pain

Misery rain, agony or shame
Oh will you bleed forever in their crown of lies, enslaved your name… misery rain….

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Rains's song "Misery" depict a haunting and emotional portrayal of someone who is deeply affected by the suffering and turmoil experienced by another person. The first verse suggests that the singer sees the face of this individual from a distance, and is haunted by the ghosts of their troubled mind. The singer wonders about the extent of the suffering endured by this person, which led them to be consumed by their own despair.

The second verse highlights the detrimental impact of negative criticism and the influence of manipulative individuals. The "water of those bad tongues" and the "salt in your eyes" symbolize the hurtful words and tears caused by the cruel opinions and lies of others. Both the words and the temptations of a seemingly better life have led this person to drown in their own misery.

The third verse reveals the singer's struggle to come to terms with the changes they have witnessed in this individual. The person they once knew seems to have transformed, losing their innocence and being consumed by a storm within their mind. This nostalgia is triggered whenever the singer passes by the person's home, reminding them of the years before they were taken away by this cursed storm.

In the final verse, the singer observes how this individual gradually distances themselves from their own pain, symbolized by them walking away. However, it becomes apparent that this detachment is a result of the person allowing others to manipulate and brainwash them. The mention of a green light represents the person's consent to have their mind washed with lies and false promises of a clean and better life. The singer expresses fear and sadness, as they witness this person being further entangled in a cycle of misery, where their soul is laid bare and their pain is used against them.

Overall, the lyrics of "Misery" invite us to reflect on the devastating impact of external influence and the profound effect it can have on an individual's well-being. It serves as a reminder of the importance of resilience and the need to resist falling victim to the manipulations and illusions that can trap us in a state of perpetual suffering.

I think it was scenes like this that won the Oscar...the mixture of horror and empathy.Β  You hate her, but you also feel kinda sorry for her--and it is that complexity that makes someone monstrous and pitiable.Β Β  Jennifer Jason Leigh in "Single White Female" was sort of the same in that she was so dangerous but so broken.

Hate? No. Empathetic? No. Mental issues. YES!!

@VoltNoodles As someone with BPD as well, she definitely has it, it's just that she has it in tandem with antisocial personality disorder, which is what makes her so violent and dangerous. She lacks genuine empathy, whereas I feel people with BPD end up having too much of it (albeit, in numb states, not feeling much of anything)...

@Andy Wood I actually thought Annie wilkes had BPD, not bipolar. This is coming from someone who has BPD. I don't at all think I'm like Annie, but she shows some pretty tell tale signs of a severe case.

Zill Martinez

@Andy Wood To be fair, Annie clearly suffers from a mix of the two. It does explain how she can go from completely chipper and quirky to psychotically ranting in a matter of seconds, plus having an intense crush on a man who she hardly even knew.

Gman's Gnarly Science Show

I almost hate her, but I mostly feel sorry for her.

Annie: β€œI better go now. I might put bullets in it.”

How can Paul even sleep a wink after hearing that??!! Scary.

@Matthew-E Purnell in the book he becomes massively addicted to the pain killers she gives him, so much so that he goes through terrible withdrawals when she leaves him alone for days on end. As someone who has been through herion and fent withdrawals, I can't IMAGINE the pain of going through that while being locked up in a crazy woman's house, AND while your legs/ankles are broken. Terrible...

When she said that, my heart leaped into my throat! Christ.

Matthew-E Purnell

He probably took pills every night in order to sleep because his legs were giving him a lot of pain.
