Take control, hand in hand with yourself from now on
Take this advise, aim to the skies
Aim to the skies above
Show me what you're made of
Waiting for the answer
Tell me what you're afraid of
I call out in my sleep
I can't reach you and it's killing me
I call out in my sleep
Sun is gone, days go on like the storm in the sea
And the shore is the loneliest place you can be
Stay dry instead a moment ahead
Aim to the skies above
Show me what you're made of
Waiting for the answer
Tell me what you're afraid of
Show me what you're made of
I call out in my sleep
I can't reach you and it's killing me
I call out in my sleep
You say that you're not the same kid
The one who used to be the weeper
You say it's something deeper
Something that you couldn't tame
Something that would wake the sleeper
You say, you say
I call out in my sleep
I can't reach you and it's killing me
I call out in my sleep
Call out
Can't reach you
Calling in out
Can't reach you
The lyrics to The Rasmus's song "Smash" speak of holding a metaphorical bomb, being in control of one's life, and aiming high. The song encourages taking control of one's life and facing fears. The repeated phrase "show me what you're made of," suggests testing one's limits and living up to one's potential. The chorus goes on to describe a sense of helplessness, the inability to reach someone, and the pain that comes with it. The final lines of the song speak to a transformation and a growing sense of strength and control.
The first few lines of "Smash" serve as a metaphor for life. It's up to us to take control of the metaphorical "bomb" – our lives - and aim high. The "bomb" in this instance refers to the power and potential that each of us has within ourselves. The lyrics are challenging the listener to harness that energy and use it instead of allowing it to go to waste. The pre-chorus then asks the listener to rise to the occasion and show what they're made of. It is a challenge to test one's limits and to embrace their potential.
The chorus talks about the pain that comes with being unable to reach someone. The sense of helplessness is profound, and it causes a great deal of pain. The repeated use of "calling out" underscores the message of the chorus. It's a plea to find some way to reach someone who is unreachable. The final lyrics refer to a transformation from the past. The singer is recognizing that the person they're speaking to has changed, and that something deeper and more profound has taken place. The song ends with a determination to overcome whatever fears and anxieties exist and to live life in a state of empowerment.
