1) The Ravens were an R&B vocal group. They were formed in 1945 by Jimmy Ricks and Warren Suttles. They were structurally similar to The Ink Spots, especially in their combination of high tenor (Maithe Marshall) and deep bass (Ricks), but their material was more varied, including elements of pop, jazz, R&B, and gospel styles.
Although they had excellent lead tenors (Maithe Marshall, and later, Joe Van Loan), the Ravens primarily existed to showcase bass singer Jimmy "Ricky" Ricks. In this, they were so successful, that Ricks' voice became the standard against which every rhythm and blues bass was measured for the next generation. It is not an exaggeration to say that every aspiring rhythm and blues singer with a low voice wanted to sound like Ricks. His voice was so deep and rich, however, that few even came close; no one surpassed him. In spite of this, the Ravens had few chart hits, although they were very popular at appearances.
The group's greatest successes were in the late 1940s, including covers of "Ol' Man River" (1947) and "Count Every Star" (1950). They had continued success into the 1950s, but Suttles left the group in 1954 and Ricks in 1955. The group continued on for some time thereafter, with various changes in personnel, but it was never as successful or influential as before.

The Ravens Lyrics

Fragrant roses in bloom
Garden bench with just room for two
You are the she-ro, I am the he-ro
Love is prompting the play
Here's the cue where I say to you
Say you love me too, honey
No one else will do, honey,
Seems funny but it's true
Loved you from the start, honey
Bless your little heart, honey
Ev-ry day would be so sunny,
Honey with you.
One thing is certain, second at curtain
Shows a wedding in June,
And a sweet honeymoon for two
With your permission, no intermission
There's so much in my heart
And so much to impart to you.
I'm in love with you, honey
Say you love me too, honey
No one else will do, honey,
Seems funny but it's true
Loved you from the start, honey
Bless your little heart, honey
Ev-ry day would be so sunny,
Honey with you.
The Ravens's song Honey is a romantic ode to the beginnings of love. It opens with a beautiful scene set on a moonlit June night with fragrant roses in bloom. The setting is a garden bench that barely fits two people, and the lyrics paint a picture of a man and a woman who are in love. He calls her the she-ro, while he is the he-ro, emphasizing how essential they are to one another. The man expresses his feelings of love for her, inviting her to reciprocate his love. The song's mood is idealistic, and the language used is sweet and endearing.
The second verse of the song takes a sudden turn, and we are shown the future that awaits them. The storyteller imagines a wedding in June and a sweet honeymoon for the couple. He alludes to a deep love that's felt in his heart, and he wants to express it to her. The entire song speaks about the power of love and how it transforms people. The song highlights how they feel like they are meant for each other and no one else will do. The chorus repeats expressing the same message of love, honey and how wonderful life would be with each other.
