If you go straight to mendez after apprehend jacob in his apartment, you will miss the interrogation scene with him in central station.

You still have chance to get five star and another plus side is you won't be getting scold by your captain. And also it will give you a bit funny case notes at the end.

Also, Cole could've noticed that someone have set mendez up because in his apartment bedroom, we can only find one shoe and the window was open.

This part not only has elements of the Black Dahlia murder case but the Cleveland Torso Killer case as well. Like the fictional culprit in the game, the prime Torso Killer suspect, Dr. Francis E. "Frank" Sweeney, had a relative (cousin) who was a big-time Congressman, Martin L. Sweeney. Congressman Sweeney ordered the case shut down while he had his cousin Francis committed to a mental institution in Dayton under lock and key.

I just suprised, how did the real killer manipulate the case like this. Planting an evidence and use an opportunity effectively. Like, how did he identify his target? As far as I know his targets are drunken women, is he doing some stakeout in the bar? To know target inside and out like that need a perfect recon, was he stalking on her?

He worked for a temp agency that led him to bounce between numerous bars in LA, (such as Bamba, El Dorado, Baron’s, Mensch’s, etc.) and given the usual clientele that attended the bars he worked at, Mason was certainly spoiled for choice of victims with the amount of frustrated women who aired their dirty laundry to him in drunken confidence. Each victim had horrible marital relations, or attracted the attention of unsavory individuals, which both worked to Mason’s favor in throwing the cops off his scent as there was absolutely no reason to suspect him until he started taunting them with personal effects from each victim, and Shelley poems. He could’ve done this for years and the LAPD would’ve been none the wiser.

The department and even the press had serious suspicions that the women murdered in the cases were connected to the black dahlia killer, but the captain tried to cover it up because they didn't want to reopen supposedly solved cases and didn't want to spread any doubt of the departments capabilities. It's only until the last mission where they finally receive enough letters and taunts from Mason that they realize he really is the Dahlia killer and they can't ignore it, leading to Phelps chasing after him.

P.s. Not being familiar with a writer isn't "not smart enough," everyone in the department was lost because they hadn't read some Shelley. Phelps being the first man exposed to the letters who was familiar.

Yea there are a few plot holes in the Homicide cases.It’s implied Mason would gather information from the women when they were intoxicated at a bar,They would tell him some of the personal problems in their lives which gave mason people to blame and locations to plant evidence to frame them.

@Jo Nathan That doesn't make sense though. VIce is ranked higher than Homicide, at least at these police stations.

Arson was supposed to be boring at first, since it's the lost department of the police force. Not much happens, which is what Biggs revealed during the first Arson case. But, the story heated up due to the house being burned. Monroe and his crew didn't expect to be caught, but, Phelps couldn't do it on his own; enter Jack Kelso

@nv Yes, a section of the game with cole in the burglary department was planned but cut from the game because it was already long enough for rockstar.
I have to say I would have enjoyed burglary more than the arson section. And it might have made the pacing even better. For me Homicide is easily the most interesting and rewarding part of the game. So it would have been kind of cool to work harder to get there and really have it as a high point of the game.

Spoiler alert:
And then having Narcotics/ Vice as the punishment for beeing taken of off Homicide, while still having great missions. For me personally arson always felt super shit. And I even quit my first playthrough there because it felt so unengaging after the super awesome cases before. I

He got promoted from Traffic to Burglary, then there was 6 month skip. Directly after the skip Cole gets promoted to Homicide and this case starts.

Unfortunately there are no Burglary cases in the game as far as I'm aware of.
