Unsatisfied
The Replacements Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look me in the eye
Then, tell me that I'm satisfied
Was you satisfied?
Look me in the eye
Then, tell me that I'm satisfied
Hey, are you satisfied?

And it goes so slowly on
Everything I've ever wanted
Tell me what's wrong

Look me in the eye
And tell me that I'm satisfied
Were you satisfied?
Look me in the eye
Then, tell me that I'm satisfied
And now are you satisfied?

Everything goes
Well, anything goes all of the time
Everything you dream of
Is right in front of you
And everything is a lie

Look me in the eye
And tell me that I'm satisfied
Look me in the eye
Unsatisfied
I'm so, I'm so unsatisfied
I'm so dissatisfied
I'm so, I'm so unsatisfied
I'm so unsatisfied
Well, I'm-a
I'm so, I'm so unsatisfied

I'm so dissatis, dissattis
I'm so

Overall Meaning

The Replacements' song "Unsatisfied" explores the feeling of emptiness and the inability to find contentment despite having everything one could dream of. The lyrics directly challenge the notion that the singer or anyone else can be truly satisfied with their current situation. The repetition of the line, "Look me in the eye, then tell me that I'm satisfied," emphasizes the singer's frustration with being told that they should be happy with what they have. The slow pace of the song adds to the overall sense of melancholy that permeates the track.

The line, "Everything you dream of is right in front of you, and everything is a lie," speaks to the idea of disillusionment and shattered expectations. Despite being surrounded by wealth and opportunities, the singer feels incomplete and unfulfilled. The song ends with the repeated refrain of "I'm so unsatisfied," driving home the central message of the track.

In 4 minutes Paul Westerberg encapsulates most of my life and how I still feel nowadays sometimes. Great guitar playing and Paul's anguished vocals perfectly express the sentiment of the song. Spokesman for a generation!

I’m 24 and was not even a thought when this song was written but it has always been one of my favourite all time songs for the same reasons. I was 15 when I first heard this song and it immediately resonated with me, coming from a broken home and having debilitating depression. Paul is my voice, two generations later!

@Jacob Varsanyi I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve had rough times in your life. I’ve struggled with depression too and music has always been my comfort and refuge.

We are at such a broken moment now in the world—this song speaks to it better than any words could. It’s that guitar and the rasp in Westerberg’s voice. Absolutely a classic.

The band that saved my life. I remember my father passing away from suicide back in 2013 and here’s a 20-year-old kid not knowing what else to do in my life and even contemplated suicide. I had no girlfriend no band and I just lost my father... and a long comes this band that I discover. And then I realized there’s a lot more worth living. To pull through and create gorgeous music such as this. I am in debt to this band for life.

One of the greatest songs of all-time. Westerberg literally bared his soul on Unsatisfied giving a voice to the millions of the rest of us who feel exactly the same way he does.
