Return
The Ridleys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I stumble and fall
You always answer when I call
What could I give you in return?

Nights when I start to cry
You stitch my heart and kiss my eyes
What could I give you in return?
You know the wrongs I've done
But still you call me son
You rejoice when I return

You've become my home
You tell me you'll never let me go
And I believe your every word
That comes from your tongue
Pierces my soul and makes it burn
What could I give you in return?

Bloody they may be
But your hands are still holding me
My feet have brought me far
Still you draw me to where you are
I'm glad that I returned

Ooh, what could I give you in return?
Ooh, what could I give you in return?
Ooh, what could I give you in return?
Ooh, what could I give you in return?

Ooh, what could I give you in return?
Ooh, what could I give you in return?

Overall Meaning

The song "Return" by The Ridleys is a reflection on the relentless love and forgiveness of a higher power. The lyrics convey a sense of humility and gratitude in the face of undeserved kindness. The singer acknowledges his own flaws and mistakes but also recognizes the faithfulness of his benefactor. The recurring question "What could I give you in return?" expresses a sentiment of unworthiness and a desire to reciprocate, even though he knows he cannot match the depth of the love he has been given.

The singer describes moments of vulnerability and brokenness when he turns to his source of comfort. The lines "Nights when I start to cry / You stitch my heart and kiss my eyes" paint a vivid picture of a caring presence that heals emotional wounds and provides a sense of safety. The phrase "You've become my home" affirms the importance of this relationship as a source of stability and identity. The lines "Bloody they may be / But your hands are still holding me" suggest a reference to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, adding a layer of religious significance to the song.

Overall, "Return" is a testimony to the transformative power of love and the possibility of redemption, even in the face of human weakness and failure. The singer's introspective tone and heartfelt delivery convey a sense of reverence and awe.

sa series ng prodigal son, sa prodigals lang yata ako makaka-relate. but these songs comfort me in a way of making me feel feels i've never felt.

@annanamamary

You are may be in your phase in life that you are still “the prodigal son” but since you’ve listened to this song/album, it’s also like knowing some parts of the Gospel. And please always know that you can always come to Jesus and to the Father. If you ever came to the point of your life that you felt like you’ve gone too far and feeling so lost, remember the story of the prodigal son, and how this story came to Jesus’ own mouth.

You can always go back home and come to God. As long as you’re alive, you still have a chance. Fighting!
