With ba… Read Full Bio ↴Robert Cray is an American blues guitarist, composer and singer.
With bassist Richard Cousins, keyboardist Peter Boe and drummer Tom Murphy, they launched The Robert Cray Band in 1980 with "Who's Been Talkin". The album was recorded during constant touring in the U.S. in 1978. The record was initially shelved for two years, being eventually issued by the short-lived Tomato label (whose licence was picked up by "Atlantic Records" (U.S.) and "Charly" in the UK.
After several years of regional success, Cray was signed to Mercury in 1982. It was the connection with the producing and songwriting team of Bruce Bromberg and Dennis Walker at Hightone that helped to create the mold-breaking music of "Bad Influence" (1983) and "False Accusations" (1985).
In 1984, The Robert Cray Band completed their first European tour to critical acclaim. Cray's participation with Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland on "Showdown!" (1985, Alligator) and the 1986 album release, "Strong Persuader", again produced by Walker, both received Grammy Awards, while the crossover single "Smoking Gun" gave him wider appeal and name recognition. During 1986 Cray played 170 concerts, including his seventh European tour since 1984, building on his increasing reputation in the UK.
The Robert Cray Band's next album "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" (1988) was recorded in Los Angeles, California, and featured David Sanborn on guest saxophone. The title song from the album won Cray his third Grammy, and he guested on Eric Clapton's "Journeyman", whilst also being on the bill at Clapton's eighteen show marathon at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 1991 Cray was selected to present Howlin' Wolf's induction trophy to Wolf's widow, Lilly Burnett, at the sixth annual "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" Awards. Later that year Cray took part in the "Newport Jazz Festival" with B. B. King and John Lee Hooker.
Cray issued his following records under his own name, Robert Cray

A single room with one big twin
There's a chest and mirror
Shower's down the hall
Room 16 ain't got no view
But the hot plate's brand new
I guess I showed her
Once again I've been burned
My suspicion's been confirmed
I saw her having lunch
With some new guy
I walked up and said, "Goodbye"
She said, "Wait, can we talk tonight?"
I guess I showed her
Mmmm, I guess I showed her
I guess I showed her
I guess I showed her
I guess I showed her that a man, yeah
Has his limits
Another man is where I draw the line
She can have the house
And everything that's in it
I guess I showed her, yeah
I guess I showed her
She will be surprised
When she comes in tonight
Flips on the light
And finds an empty home
Yeah, every time she's lied
Will flash before her eyes
I guess I showed her, yeah, yeah
I guess I showed her
I guess I showed her, yeah, yeah
I guess I showed her
Now she can have the house
And she can keep the car
I'm just satisfied
Staying in this funky, little old motel
I'm so mad
Well I can't stand it
I can't stand it
Nooooooo!
The song "I Guess I Showed Her" by The Robert Cray Band tells the story of a man who has been betrayed by his girlfriend. He moves out of their shared house and into a small motel room, realizing that he has reached his limit with her lies and cheating. In the first verse of the song, he describes the room he has rented in great detail, highlighting the fact that it may not be the most pleasant place to live, but it is a symbol of his newfound independence. The chorus of the song, "I guess I showed her," is a triumphant declaration that he has taken control of the situation and is no longer a victim.
In the second verse of the song, the man confronts his ex-girlfriend after seeing her out with someone new. She tries to talk to him and maybe make things right, but he has had enough and walks away. The chorus continues to affirm his strength and resolve. In the final verse of the song, the man reflects on what has happened and realizes that he is better off without her. He gives up everything he had with her, including the car and the house, and instead chooses to stay in the hotel room. The song ends with a powerful scream of frustration and anger.
The lyrics of "I Guess I Showed Her" demonstrate the themes of independence, strength in the face of betrayal, and the ability to walk away from a toxic relationship. The song is a powerful anthem for anyone who has ever been hurt by a partner and empowered themselves to leave and start anew.

I was the Bartender when he had his first gig after winning the blues award when he was starting....we had 16 people in the Sweetwater in Mill Valley....3 months later he was playing in front of 15,000 people......Jeannie Patterson was a genius for music for so many blues players

Another true master of the Strat. Also an excellent story teller.
This song reminds of me of my second marriage. I took my kids and left her. My job paid for the divorce. I would say to my kids " I guess I showed her " and they'd say " yeah dad you showed".

Damn I missed these tracks. I grew up with my parents listening to Cray, SRV, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton. The greats. Always I’ll have the blues in my soul.

I hear a Lot of Clapton in his solos and I can hear the heavy gage strings he plays. First time I seen him was Eric Clapton crossrodes . fell in love right then and there
