It wasn't actually him producing his music. I believe the rumor that back then Cor Fijmaman and few other artists were his ghost producers. It actually fits if you listen to old Cor's productions they sound very close to Tiesto style. It seems that Cor decided to stop ghost producing for him and Tiesto had to change his style because he couldn't produce in the same style on his own. The same thing happened to David Guetta. Firstly Joachim Garraud ghostproduced for him. Then they produced as a duo and then when Joachim decided to go his own way David Guetta started to produce pure EDM and Joachim continued old Guetta style like The World is Mine for example.
