A LiFE ON EARTH is a concept album written by Adjan Emmen. It tells the story of life,
of birth and desire but also of deep desperation and destruction gradually evolving into healing and hope. This theme is appealing and certainly identifiable for many people.
The concept album A LiFE ON EARTH by THE ROCK FiLES has been released ten years after the first songs were written by Adjan. All of his life he has been playing music. In 1990 he passed his exam at the Arnhem Conservatory. He has played in various bands. He is also a guitar teacher. In 2000 he founded the band Omsk with the legendary dutch rock bassplayer Peter Vink (Q65, Finch, Star One, Ayreon). There were several concerts between 2000 and 2003 but the band could never find the right singer and so Omsk fell apart. Peter and Adjan continued to elaborate the songs of Omsk, but when Peter got too busy with another project he set aside his work with these songs. The name of the band THE ROCK FiLES refers to the name of the files Adjan saved his unreleased music in.
He still continued to work on these songs from time to time.
When singer Jerry ten Bhömer heard of this project he enthusiastically proposed to participate. It turned out that he had the right voice for this kind of music. He and Adjan together renewed the project and Jerry took care of the lyrics. Step by step the separate songs turned into a coherent story in which each song is a chapter on its own. The story holds eleven songs: LiFE, BiRTH, DESiRE, DESPAiR, SiNKiNG, REGRESSiON, REBiRTH, RiSING, CHiLD, PRECiOUS and FAiTH. They tell about the struggle of life that Adjan himself has experienced. As the last titles already indicate, A LiFE ON EARTH will end hopeful. With the project developing, the thought soon arose to bring THE ROCK FiLES as a live band on stage with these musicians:
Jerry ten Bhömer (vocals), Rutger Klijn (bass guitar), Pim Kooiman (drums), Marco Hoogerheide (keyboards) and Adjan Emmen (guitars).
Now rock opera A LiFE ON EARTH beautifully combines a musical story and a video animation on stage. On may 14th 2011, THE ROCK FiLES played it's first live show, the CD was released and the first copy was handed out to Peter Vink.
THE ROCK FiLES is strongly influenced by bands such as Queensrÿche, Savatage, Deep Purple, Slade and Led Zeppelin. Alice in Chains was also a source of inspiration. The TRF style is closest to progressive rock. Characteristics of the THE ROCK FiLES music are ever-recurring jazz chords, rhythmical challenges and guitar-riff orientated songs.
