Those Oldies But Goodies
The Romans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you
The songs of the past bring back memories of you
I always remember the first night we met
The songs they were playing I never will forget

I always will treasure them so close to my heart
They always will haunt me although we're apart
Each time that I hear them a tear's bound to fall
For I love those memories that I, I-I recall

Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you
The songs of the past bring back memories of you
Forever they will haunt me but what can I do?

Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you
(Oldies but goodies reminds me of you)

Yes, dear, they are playin' our songs.
And they will always remain our songs
And each time you hear them, I hope you, too, will cherish the wonderful
Memories that our love once knew.
For these songs are just a symbol of the
Love that I had for you.

Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you
The songs of the past bring back memories of you
Forever they will haunt me but what can I do?

Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you
(Oldies but goodies reminds me of you)

Overall Meaning

The Romans's song "Those Oldies but Goodies" is a nostalgic and sentimental tribute to the power of music to evoke memories of a past love. The lyrics express a deep longing for the love that has been lost and the way that certain songs trigger the memory of a special moment shared between two people. The opening lines "Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you / The songs of the past bring back memories of you" set the tone for the rest of the song, drawing a direct connection between music and nostalgia.

The second verse recalls a specific moment when the two lovers first met and the songs that were playing in the background on that unforgettable occasion. The chorus follows with a melancholic admission that these old songs will always remind the singer of their lost love, and these memories will always tug at their heartstrings. Finally, the bridge offers a glimmer of hope that perhaps the person on the other side of the song will also be moved by these oldies but goodies and cherish the memories of their lost love, just like the singer does.

In summary, "Those Oldies but Goodies" poignantly expresses the bittersweet emotions that come with remembering a past love through the lens of music, and the power that certain songs can have to evoke deep emotions and memories.

My brother Nick Curinga and his friend Paul Politti were high school students when they wrote this song in 1961. They are both still alive. I was only 6 years old. I remember my brother and LIttle Cesar and the Romans getting ready for Bandstand. The song was running neck and neck on KHJ and KRLA with a song called Im Sorry. Great memories.
