The RPO was founded in 1946 by Thomas Beecham and played its first concert in Croydon on September 15, 1946. Beecham was principal conductor until his death in 1961. He was followed by then assistant conductor Rudolf Kempe, who was given the title of Conductor for Life in 1970. Subsequent musical directors and principal conductors have been Antal Doráti (1975-78), Walter Weller (1980-85), André Previn (1985-92), Vladimir Ashkenazy (1987-94). Yuri Temirkanov was appointed principal conductor in 1992, and Daniele Gatti music director in 1996.
The orchestra toured the United States in 1950, thus becoming the first British orchestra to visit America since the London Symphony Orchestra in 1912.
As well as performing works from the classical repertoire, the RPO has recorded a number of film scores, including those for Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Red Shoes.
Associated with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, which is devoted to playing lighter classics. It was formed in 1987.
They had a single in the summer of 1981 called Hooked On Classics and also another single which was the BBC Grandstand Theme in 1982.

Un sueno me envolvio
This dream was me and you
Tal vez esta aqui
I want all the world to see
Un instinto me guiaba
A miracle sensation
My guide and inspiration
The wind is a gentle breeze
EI me hablo de ti
The bells are ringing out
EI canto vuela
They're calling us together
Guiding us forever
Wish my dream would never go away
Barcelona
It was the first time that we met
Barcelona
How can I forget
The moment that you stepped into the room
You took my breath away
Barcelona
La musica vibro
Barcelona
Yella nos unio
And if God is willing
We will meet again
Someday
Let the songs begin
Dejalo nacer
Let the music play
Ah
Make the voices sing
Nace un gran amor
Start the celebration
Ven a mi
And cry
Grita
Come alive
Vive
And shake the foundations from the skies
Shaking all our lives
Barcelona
Such a beautiful horizon
Barcelona
Like a jewel in the sun
Por ti sere gaviota de tu bella mar
Barcelona
Suenan las campanas
Barcelona
Abre tus puertas al mundo
If God is willing
If God is willing
If God is willing
Friends until the end
Viva!
Barcelona!
The lyrics to The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's song "Barcelona" evoke a dreamlike and enchanting atmosphere. The song celebrates the magic and beauty of the city, using it as a metaphor for a deep connection and love between two individuals. The opening lines express the singer's perfect dream, where they and their beloved are united. It suggests that this dream has become their reality, slowly coming true.
The lyrics capture the essence of Barcelona, describing it as a place where music vibrates and unites people. The feeling of awe and wonder is palpable as the singer recalls the moment they first met their beloved in Barcelona. It was a transformative experience, taking their breath away. The music intensifies this sensation, with the voices singing and the celebration starting, symbolizing the passion and energy of the city.
The second half of the song emphasizes the eternal connection and friendship between the singer and their beloved. The mention of God's willingness suggests a belief in fate or destiny, that they will meet again someday. The lyrics continue to exalt Barcelona as a beautiful horizon, a jewel in the sun, and the enchanted sea. The song ends with a triumphant cry, declaring the everlasting bond and celebrating the city of Barcelona.
