The Analog Kid
The Rush Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A hot and windy August afternoon
Has the trees in constant motion
With a flash of silver leaves
As they're rocking in the breeze

The boy lies in the grass with one blade
Stuck between his teeth
A vague sensation quickens
In his young and restless heart
And a bright and nameless vision
Has him longing to depart

You move me
You move me
With your buildings and your eyes
Autumn woods and winter skies
You move me
You move me
Open sea and city lights
Busy streets and dizzy heights
You call me
You call me

The fawn-eyed girl with sun-browned legs
Dances on the edge of his dream
And her voice rings in his ears
Like the music of the spheres

The boy lies in the grass, unmoving
Staring at the sky
His mother starts to call him
As a hawk goes soaring by
The boy pulls down his baseball cap
And covers up his eyes

You move me
You move me
With your buildings and your eyes
Autumn woods and winter skies
You move me
You move me
Open sea and city lights
Busy streets and dizzy heights
You call me
You call me

Too many hands on my time
Too many feelings
Too many things on my mind
When I leave, I don't know
What I'm hoping to find
When I leave, I don't know
What I'm leaving behind

Overall Meaning

The song "The Analog Kid" by the Canadian rock band Rush is a poetic and introspective representation of a boy's mind and his restless soul that wants to set out and explore the world around him. The song takes the listener on a journey about a boy who is lounging in the grass on a hot and windy August afternoon, contemplating his life's purpose. He is looking at the sky and watching the trees sway in the wind, feeling a deep longing to depart from where he is and find his calling. As he stares at the sky, his restless heart begins to feel a vague sensation that is driving him to explore the bright and nameless vision in his mind.

The boy is moved by the world around him as he watches the architecture of the buildings and the beauty of the natural landscape, the autumn woods, winter skies, and the open sea. Everything moves him and calls out to him to explore further. He sees a fawn-eyed girl with sun-browned legs dancing in his realm of dreams, and he is mesmerized by the music of the spheres ringing in his ears. The song poetically takes the listener on this journey of a boy's mind and his restlessness. Yet, with all these feelings and thoughts, he is also aware of how there are too many things on his mind and too many emotions, and he doesn't know what he hopes to find when he departs or what he is leaving behind.

I wish i was alive when rock was becoming big and what we know it today; late 70's early 80's.

But you know what they say, you only want what you never had. I wouldn't be able to listen to music as freely then, we have free music now, paid for by adsense.

When this came out I was the Analog kid laying in the grass. Now I'm the old man in Losing it struggling to connect with the creative side of my brain wondering if I'm all spent. What an amazing feat of writing that Neil was able to bookend all of our lives with this album.

@martinberry4315

Losing it is, in my opinion, one of the best song of all time.

@@martinberry4315 Available Light off of Presto is also one of their most underrated beautiful songs.
