Tonight Tonight
The S.P Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh yeah, here I go again
Trading my sould to the night - but it's
Alright, I got no pain tonight
My demon alcohol's alive
Oh no I can't stand
Trading nine lives for tonight
But it don't matter much
Cause I don't give a fuck
Hell on wheels I wanna ride

But tonight
No I can't die tonight
Maybe I'll live forever
I just can't die tonight

Tonight
No I can't die tonight
So high I'll live forever
No I can't die tonight

Whiskey bar superman
I don't give a damn
Oh it's alright
I'm too numb to stand
And I don't give a damn
Oh too high to die

Can't die tonight
No, no not tonight

Can't die tonight
Oh no tonight

Overall Meaning

The song "Tonight, Tonight" by The Smashing Pumpkins is a song about surrendering to the power of the night and letting go of one's inhibitions. The singer of the song speaks of trading their soul and sacrificing their life for a night of hedonism and pleasure. The lyrics depict the singer's reliance on alcohol as their source of escape, allowing them to live a life absent of pain for one night. The singer acknowledges the recklessness of their actions, but they don't give a "fuck." They are living life on their own terms, without any regard for the consequences.

The chorus of the song, "No I can't die tonight. Maybe I'll live forever. I just can't die tonight," speaks of the intoxicating power of the night, as well as the singer's desire to prolong the experience. They want to live forever, only just for tonight. The lines "Whiskey bar Superman, I don't give a damn. Oh, it's alright. I'm too numb to stand," evoke an image of the singer as a superhuman, impervious to the dangers of the night. Yet, they are aware of their state, as they are too numb to stand.

In conclusion, "Tonight, Tonight" is a song that speaks to the primal nature of human beings. It captures the euphoria and recklessness of a night of living without any limits. The lyrics illustrate the singer's willingness to surrender to their desires and live life on their own terms, for just one night.

Time is never time at all
You can never ever leave
Without leaving a piece of youth
And our lives are forever changed
We will never be the same
The more you change, the less you feel
Believe
Believe in me
Believe, believe
That life can change
That you're not stuck in vain
We're not the same, we're different
Tonight
Tonight
Tonight, so bright
Tonight
Tonight
And you know you're never sure
But you're sure you could be right
If you held yourself up to the light
And the embers never fade
In your city by the lake
The place where you were born
Believe
Believe in me
Believe, believe
In the resolute urgency of now
And if you believe there's not a chance
Tonight
Tonight
Tonight, so bright
Tonight
Tonight
We'll crucify the insincere tonight
(Tonight)
We'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonight
(Tonight)
We'll find a way to offer up the night
(Tonight)
The indescribable moments of your life
(Tonight)
The impossible is possible tonight
(Tonight)
Believe in me as I believe in you
Tonight
Tonight, tonight
Tonight
Tonight

My best friend died 20 years ago tonight. Car crash, he was 16. Timmy Bourque. He introduced me to Smashing Pumpkins. Tonight I'm drunk, listening on repeat, and loving the box of his memories I'll never give up.

I am a 65-year-old African American male, when this song came out in 1996 I was 43 years old. I like all kinds of music and this song was incredible! The video was mesmerizing. Billy's voice pierced through all the noise - I bought this double album and it (along with Tupac's "All Eyez On Me") dominated my psyche for the next year at least. What a rush to spontaneously pull this up while working on a project. A time machine, music is.

I was a 15 year old white youth listening to Wu Tang. Funny how music brings us together.

I was 3 and didn't have much preference in music at the time ;) But this ended up becoming my favorite band 10 years later, and still remains my favorite more than 10 years after that.

I was 18 and into punk, although I had respect for Smashing Pumpkins ever since I heard "Gish" in 1991. In 1996 I first tried smoking weed and opened my mind to all kinds of different music. I had a crush on Fiona Apple. Time flies.
