Conquistador
The Samples Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He sees the moon reflect
Off the shiny steel
And though it's high above
It looks so real

Ships in the bay give birth
To smaller wooden fish
And when they reach the shore
They look so real

Another season gone
And many more will come
If you accept this now
All will change

They look up to the sky
Thinking of the days
Before their worlds clashed
They sound so real

Time to run, tell the others
Dressed in steel
They're on our island

He asks the elders now
To speak his native tongue
He needs to hear the words
They remember none

Ships in the bay return
Create a whole new race
And though they are not Gods
They look so real

Time to run, tell the others

On the other side of our island
Time to run on the other side

Overall Meaning

The Samples's song Conquistador speaks of a time when the conquest of land and the colonization of people was rampant. The lines "He sees the moon reflect off the shiny steel / And though it's high above, it looks so real" point out the reflection of the moon off the shiny metal that the man sees, which is perhaps a sword or a gun. The sight of it appears so real to him, and implies the brutal reality that's going to ensue.

The second and third quadrants of the song bring out the helplessness of those who are being colonized. The lines "Ships in the bay give birth to smaller wooden fish / And when they reach the shore, they look so real" indicate the arrival of smaller boats that bring new inhabitants to the land. The next lines "Another season gone, and many more will come / If you accept this now, all will change" creates a sense of foreboding and the inevitability of change that will come with colonization.

The last quadrant of the song highlights the resistance put on by the natives who were colonized. The lines "Time to run, tell the others, dressed in steel / They're on our island" implore the natives to run and warn others about the invaders who are coming. The song speaks to the cruelty and violence that ensued during colonization, which has implications for the present and the future.
