A Monument Encased In Ash
The Showdown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Will you destroy the righteous with the wicked
Shine your mercy on but 50 men
Show me 10 yet worthy to see the sun again
Though you're naught but dust and ash I will relent

Stand and be counted
Turn from these ruins
Run

Fire rains from the sky
The hand of justice falls
You spit in the face of one whose might is yet untold
Fire rains from the sky
The scales have tipped too far
A monument encased in ash naught but a grave

Where are these men that came to you this night
Bring them forth that we may know them
Be struck blind clear now a path for those I love
Await the brimstone that comes soon to fill your grave

Stand and be counted
Turn from these ruins
Run

Fire rains from the sky
The hand of justice falls
You spit in the face of one whose might is yet untold
Fire rains from the sky
The scales have tipped too far
A monument encased in ash naught but a grave

Whoa break it down

The stench of Sodom quenched in smoke and flame
Angels enraged bring judgment hence
Justice comes burning sear you from the face of the earth
Dead eyes raised to an ash choked sky

Stand and be counted
Turn from these ruins
Run

Fire rains from the sky
The hand of justice falls
You spit in the face of one whose might is yet untold
Fire rains from the sky

The scales have tipped too far
A monument encased in ash naught but a grave

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song are highly influenced by the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible, where God destroyed these cities with fire and sulfur because of the wickedness of their inhabitants. The lyrics start with a plea to God to spare the righteous among the wicked, making reference to a biblical conversation between Abraham and God where Abraham asks God to spare the city if fifty righteous people were found in it, then forty-five, forty, and so on. The song then continues with a description of the destruction that is about to happen, with fire raining from the sky, and the powerful hand of justice falling. The lyrics suggest that the people who are about to be destroyed have had the chance to repent but chose not to, and now they face the consequences of their actions.

The lyrics also contain the imagery of a monument encased in ash, which suggests that the people who are about to be destroyed will not be remembered for anything but as a warning for others to follow a righteous path. The song ends with a directive to run away from the ruins, and a warning about the brimstone that is about to fill their grave. Overall, the lyrics suggest that the destruction that is about to happen is not arbitrary or capricious, but a result of the wickedness of the people, and that justice will be served.

I think it was back in '04, saw these guys in a little venue in East Tennessee. They opened with this song, the vocalist was standing up ontop of the speakers head banging with a skull raised up in his hand. It was a very metal moment. Later I lost my shoe in the pit, during Deus Invictus I think, he picked it up like the skull and did the same before giving it back to me. These guys were rad back then.
