Ashes in the Wind
The Shroud Lyrics

Twisting overhead the vines without leaves embrace my thoughts of you Gathered on stony steps we breathe the last whisper of the end in flames Our memories are like ashes in the wind
The lyrics of The Shroud's song Ashes in the Wind convey a powerful message about the fleeting nature of memories and relationships in the face of time and change. The opening lines paint a vivid picture of the past, as "echoes down the hallways of time spell out stories of you and me." These "stories" are a testament to the powerful connection between two individuals, and the memories that they shared together. However, even the most beautiful stories eventually come to an end, as reflected in the line "letters etched painfully all twist and curl and die beneath the flames and fade." This imagery conveys the idea that memories are subject to destruction, and that they may eventually be forgotten or lost over time.
The second verse continues in this vein, painting a bleak picture of the present as "vines without leaves embrace my thoughts of you." These "vines" represent the tangled web of memories and emotions that still cling to the singer, despite the fact that their relationship has ended. They stand on "stony steps" and "breathe the last whisper of the end in flames," symbolizing the finality and irreversibility of their separation. Finally, the chorus returns to the powerful metaphor of ashes in the wind, reminding listeners that even the strongest memories can ultimately be reduced to nothing.
Overall, the song paints a powerful portrait of the human experience, conveying the bittersweet nature of love and loss, and the fleeting nature of memory.
