Deadbeast
The Sleeping Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

old man where have you been?
can't you see that i've grown a bit cold?
pulling tricks like illusionists
tucked my existence in the black of your soul
this is gonna catch up to you in the end

i'm not waiting
so it's time i finally cut the cord

if this breaks your heart then i'll feel better
if these words could stop your breath forever
soon you'll have no one
that's why this will break your heart and i'll feel better
this is gonna catch up to you in the end

when it falls apart...

old man are you listening?
do you think i'll be taking you in?
when you're fragile and brittle bone
do you think i'll be taking you in?
this is gonna catch up to you in the end

i'm not waiting
so it's time i finally cut the cord

if this breaks your heart then i'll feel better
if these words could stop your breath forever
soon you'll have no one
that's why this will break your heart and i'll feel better
this is gonna catch up to you in the end

when it falls apart...
who will be there?
who will be there?
when it falls apart...
who will be there?
who will be there?

if this breaks your heart then i'll feel better
if these words could stop your breath forever
soon you'll have no one

that's why this will break your heart and i'll feel better
this is gonna catch up to you in the end

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Sleeping's song Deadbeast describe a bitter and vengeful relationship between the singer and an old man. The old man has hurt the singer in some unspecified way, and the singer has grown cold as a result. The old man is compared to an illusionist, someone who has pulled tricks to hide the singer away in the darkness of their soul. The singer warns that this behavior will catch up to the old man in the end, and ultimately decides to cut ties with them.

The chorus expresses the singer's satisfaction at the thought of the old man being left alone, with no one left to turn to. The singer feels justified in causing this pain because of the hurt that the old man has caused them in the past. The second verse continues the singer's bitter tone by asking if the old man expects to be taken in by them when he is old and fragile. Again, the singer reminds the old man that his past actions will catch up to him in the end.

The song seems to be exploring themes of bitterness, anger, and revenge in the context of a toxic relationship. The singer is not holding back their feelings and wants to hurt the old man in the same way that they were hurt. The repetition of the line "this is gonna catch up to you in the end" creates a sense of inevitability and foreboding.
