The Smiths signed to the independent label Rough Trade Records in 1983 and released their first album, The Smiths, in 1984. They based their songs on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Marr. Their focus on a guitar, bass, and drum sound and a fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk was a rejection of the synth-pop sound that was predominant at the time. Several Smiths singles reached the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart, and all their studio albums reached the top five of the UK Albums Chart, including the number-one album Meat Is Murder (1985). They achieved mainstream success in Europe with The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987), both of which entered the top 20 of the European Albums Chart.
Internal tensions led to the Smiths' breakup in 1987, followed by public lawsuits over royalties. Their live album Rank (1988) reached the top 10 in Europe. Since the band's dissolution, the members have refused offers to reunite and have all separately stated that the band is finished and will never reunite.

If I'm in repair or in decay
Wasting away
Salvaging the remains
cm I starting to break
Under the cycles
That I fell into
It comes in waves
Each thought of you reverberates
cnd sends me away
To my favorite place
I'll see you there
Shining through my cares
Reaching down to me
cnd now I'm lost in a dream
Where the days they have no names
Where your light it never fades
cnd where time cannot erase
Can't pull you away
I'll keep it safe
Your every thought inside of me
So I can stay
Where the days they have no names
Where your light it never fades
cnd where time cannot erase
Can't pull you away
cnd where I'll never let you go
No I'll never let you go
Yeah I won't
Where the days they have no names
Where your light it never fades
cnd where time cannot erase
Can't pull you away
But now the tide is rushing out
cnd it's finally sinking in
That you're never coming back to me again
The lyrics to The Smiths's song "I Won" seem to explore themes of internal struggle, longing, and loss. The opening lines convey a sense of uncertainty and contemplation about the singer's current state - whether they are in repair or decay. This could suggest a feeling of being torn between trying to fix things or letting them deteriorate. The reference to "wasting away" and "salvaging the remains" hints at a sense of trying to hold on to something that is slipping away.
The mention of feeling like they are starting to break under the cycles they fell into to avoid change implies a feeling of being trapped in repetitive patterns or behaviors that ultimately lead to a sense of breakdown. The desire to avoid facing the changing view suggests a resistance to confronting reality or dealing with difficult emotions.
The lyrics then shift to focus on thoughts of a specific person, perhaps a lost love or someone significant to the singer. The idea of this person sending the singer to their favorite place suggests a longing for comfort and escape from the present reality. The imagery of being lost in a dream when thinking of this person creates a sense of being consumed by memories and emotions.
The repeated refrain of finding a place where days have no names, where light never fades, and time cannot erase hints at a yearning for a perfect, timeless place where the connection with this person remains strong and unchanging. The refusal to let go and the realization that the person will never return suggest a painful acceptance of loss and the finality of certain relationships. The imagery of the tide rushing out and the realization sinking in evoke a sense of finality and coming to terms with the fact that the person will never come back.
Overall, the lyrics of "I Won" convey a complex mix of emotions including longing, desperation, acceptance, and resignation. The singer grapples with internal turmoil and external loss, clinging to memories and fantasies as a way of coping with the harsh reality of separation and abandonment. The song captures the bittersweet nature of holding on to something that is slipping away, ultimately leading to a poignant acknowledgment of the inevitability of letting go.

I Won’t Share You Lyrics
I won't share you, no
I won't share you
With the drive
And ambition
The zeal I feel
This is my time
The note I wrote
As she read, she said
"Has the Perrier gone
Straight to my head
Or is life sick and cruel, instead?"
"Yes!"
No - no - no - no - no - no
No - no - no - no - no - no
Oh...
I won't share you, no
I won't share you
With the drive
And the dreams inside
This is my time
Life tends to come and go
That's okay
As long as you know
Life tends to come and go
As long as you know
Know, know, know, know, know
Know, know, know, know
Oh...
I won't share you, no
I won't share you
With the drive
And the dreams inside
This is my time
I want the freedom and I want the guile
I want the freedom and the guile
Oh, life tends to come and go
As long as you know
Know, know, know, know
Know, know, know, know
Oh...
I won't share you, no
I won't share you
I'll see you somewhere
I'll see you sometime
Darling ...

I've been listening to this song for over 30 years and it still gives me goosebumps. This is the last song of the Smiths on their studio albums. This is perfection.

The Smiths made some of the most profound music ever made in my opinion. I will always love them .

This song is a phenomenally bittersweet embodiment of a recognition that each and every lifetime is finite and imperfect.
The tension expressed here IS a real perfection - of being 'at the end of us'. :)

I totally blew it with a girl during my senior year in high school. It was there for the taking and passed on her...I've regretted it every day since.

@jm gee The sting of this song doesn't make it go away, but here we are listening to it.
