New Year
The Smurfs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah
All is quiet on New Year's Day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you
Be with you, night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's Day
On New Year's Day
I will be with you again
I will be with you again

Under a blood red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it's true, it's true
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one

I, I will begin again
I, I will begin again

Oh, oh

Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

Ah, maybe the time is right
Oh, maybe tonight

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

And so we're told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Though I want to be with you, be with you
Night and day
Nothing changes
On New Year's Day

On New Year's Day
On New Year's Day

Overall Meaning

The Smurfs' song New Year begins with a serene and tranquil atmosphere. The verse starts by stating how everything is quiet on New Year's Day, as the world wakes up to a white cover. The smurf singing the song then wishes to be with someone special, both during the day and at night. The chorus states how nothing actually changes on New Year's Day. However, the smurf wishes to be with their sweetheart on this day, expressing the desire to spend the day together. The verse is repeated, indicating the smurf's willingness to be with their loved one again.

The second verse is more intense, as it talks about a crowd gathering under a blood-red sky. The arms of a few selected people are intertwined, and the newspapers claim something exciting is going to happen. The smurf singing the song believes that they can break through any barriers, even if they are torn in two. Going hand in hand with the first verse, the second verse also states that the smurf will begin again. The repetition of the lines indicates the smurf's hope of starting anew, despite all odds.

The last verse shifts the focus on to the theme of war. The new year may be hoped to be golden, but it seems that gold is the reason behind all the wars being fought. The smurf, yet again, expresses their wish to be with the person they love, day and night, but at the same time reminding themselves that nothing is bound to change on New Year's Day.
