(1) The Softies were Rose Melberg and Jen Sbragia, who both sang and played guitar. They recorded somewhat-wistful love songs mostly consisting of nothing but their two voices and gently intertwining electric guitars. Rose Melberg was in twee bands Tiger Trap, Gaze and Go Sailor; Jen Sbragia was in Pretty Face and is also in All Girl Summer Fun Band. The Softies disbanded, and since then Rose Melberg has pursued her solo work, while Jen Sbragia continues with All Girl Summer Fun Band.
(2) The Softies was a Dutch punk band that released two singles in 1977/78, one of them, Suicide Pilot, featured on Killed By Death #1234 compilation. About You
The Softies Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'd like to tell you twice
hey I like your band
come and take my hand
we'll travel to a distant land
I thought you were too cool
I feel like such a fool
I'll be back another day
maybe we could take guitars and play
I don't really know you
I've heard things about you
about you
The Softies' song "About You" is a simple yet emotionally evocative tune that captures the feelings of infatuation and longing. The song's lyrics speak of the singer's initial attraction to someone, the desire to know them better, and the sense of regret that comes with missed opportunities. The opening lines, "I thought you were nice, I'd like to tell you twice," reveal the singer's admiration for the object of their affection. The following verses express the singer's hope for a romantic adventure with their crush, even as they acknowledge the distance between them.
However, the ambivalence in the lyrics is palpable in lines like "I thought you were too cool, I feel like such a fool." The singer's fear of rejection is clear, as is the sense that they may have missed their chance to connect with the person they admire. The final line of the song, "I don't really know you, I've heard things about you, about you," suggests that the singer is still trying to come to terms with their own feelings and the reality of the situation.
