Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand, oh
I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man
Yeah, I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man
Huh! and that ain't cool
Huh hey hoe, I heard you shot your mama down
Hey Joe, I heard you shot your lady down
You shot her down in the ground yeah!
Yeah!
Yes, I did, I shot her
You know I caught her messin' round messin' round town
Huh, yes I did I shot her
You know I caught my old lady messin' 'round town
And I gave her the gun
And I shot her
Alright
Shoot her one more time again baby!
Yeah!
Oh dig it
Oh alright
Hey Joe,
Where you gonna run to now where you gonna go
Hey Joe, I said
Where you gonna run to now where you gonna go
I'm goin' way down south
Way down to Mexico way
Alright
I'm goin' way down south
Way down where I can be free
Ain't no one gonna find me
Ain't no hang-man gonna
He ain't gonna put a rope around me
You better believe it right now
I gotta go now
Hey, Joe
You better run on down
Goodbye everybody
Hey hey Joe
The Soulbenders’ song “Hey Joe” was originally written by Billy Roberts and made popular by the legendary rock artist Jimi Hendrix in the 1960s. The singer begins by calling out to a man named Joe, who is holding a gun, and questions what he is doing. Joe replies that he’s going down to shoot his old lady because he caught her “messin’ ‘round with another man”, indicating infidelity. Joe has already shot his mama and his lady. Joe admits to shooting his woman and that he gave her the gun. He then tells Joe that he is going to Mexico where he can be free and away from the law.
The lyrics of “Hey Joe” shocked many listeners during the time of its release because they were quite graphic and violent, and it was also one of the first songs to openly discuss the topic of domestic murder. Furthermore, the song’s ambiguous ending, where Joe is escaping south to Mexico, gave birth to many interpretations. Some believe that Joe is fleeing to avoid prosecution whereas others believe he is going to commit suicide. The song was written in a minor key, which adds to the feeling of tension and impending doom.

This cool on so many levels. The connection to Michigan, the WONDERFULLY dated audio recording (I love it), the cool, low-tech home movies, the direct connection to one of my top 3 most listened to radio stations, that Vox organ (which looks like the same kind that's on the cover of Dave Clark Five's "Coast To Coast" album) and the chance to time travel to back to being 10 years old again for 4 minutes and 24 seconds.

This is GREAT!!!!! I was in a basement, next to the garage, band from 67 through 69. We played at the after game dances in high school. I played guitar and keyboards. I had a Vox Jaguar organ.........................Cool Beans.

Aris Hampers was a DJ in the early 70's on a Grand Rapids fm station. I listened often from Kalamazoo. Your show was great. Where did you ever come up with Phlegathon for a band name? Did you ever know Candlemass Eve? Whatever became of "Brother John" from the same station you were at? Thanks for the tunes. I see why you made #5 nationally. 7+7 is remains a little known gem. I can still hear that bluesy fade on the original that brought it all back home. Best to ya!

WOW! UNREAL! My mind just blew out of my head! In addition to the unique blend of fast and slow Hey Joe, you have home film footage of the group! Incredible! What a great piece of garage rock history!

Hey Aris, I hope you are doing well considering what you’ve been through. This is the best version of Hey Joe I have ever heard. I’m a young musician (drums, bass, keys, harmonica & guitar) about the same age as you guys in this video😂 and lemme tell you this is the stuff that inspires me. Is everyone from the band still alive and well? The intro is hauntingly beautiful, the cool tempo change and that spectacular outro!.. cool stuff man!
