In the opening lines of the song “Toxic”, The Soul's characterizes themselves as someone who is feeling cold and distant. They go on to say that they are just as challenging and courageous as the person they are addressing, but they have grown weaker over time. The individual admits to being able to stoop to the level of their opponent in order to fight in the same toxic “wonderland” as they are. They are falling with the coming snow, essentially defeated, and claim that this is where the individual will end up, even though it will be lower than they have ever been before.
Although they view themselves as the weaker and less powerful party in the situation, this individual is uncertain of the adversarial one that the song is directed towards. They can’t help but notice that every time they look in the mirror, they see the opponent reflecting back at them. Though this connection may make no sense, it is a reminder to always be on guard and get even when necessary. The closing lines of the song, “In this toxic wonderland,” symbolize a world that is filled with emotional turmoil, treachery, and ill will.
