You Do
The Sound Of Mcalmont And Butler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You got a smile so bright
You know you could've been a candle
I'm holding you so tight
You know you could've been a handle
The way you swept me off my feet
You know you could've been a broom
And girl, you so dull gone sweet
You could've been some kind of perfume

Well, you could've been anything that you wanted to
And I can tell
The way you do the things you do
(The way you do the things you do) oh babe

As pretty as you are
You know you could've been a flower
If good looks was a minute
You know you could've been an hour
The way you stole my heart
You know you could've been a crook
And baby you're so smart
You know you could've been a school book

Well, you could've been anything that you wanted to
And I can tell
The way you do the things you do
(The way you do the things you do) oh babe

You made my life so rich
You know you could've been some money
And baby you're so sweet
You know you could've been some honey

Well, you could've been anything that you wanted to
And I can tell
The way you do the things you do
(The way you do the things you do)
The way you smile so bright
(The way you do the things you do) oh babe

It makes me feel alright
(The way you do the things you do) oh babe

Overall Meaning

The Sound Of Mcalmont And Butler's song "You Do" celebrates the beauty and joy of love, as the singer praises his partner's unique qualities and imagination. The lyrics use playful metaphors and comparisons to express how the singer sees his lover as an endless source of positive energy and inspiration. The opening lines, "You got a smile so bright, You know you could've been a candle," suggest that the lover's smile is powerful enough to light up the room and create a warm atmosphere. The singer also admires his partner's physique and playfully imagines her as a household object, "I'm holding you so tight, You know you could've been a handle," and a cleaning tool, "The way you swept me off my feet, You know you could've been a broom."

The second verse of the song continues this theme of admiration, with the singer expressing his belief that his partner could be anything she wants to be. He describes her as a potential beauty and a thief of hearts, "The way you stole my heart, You know you could've been a crook," and a symbol of intelligence and knowledge, "And baby you're so smart, You know you could've been a school book." The song's chorus is a simple, yet powerful repetition of the idea that the singer loves the way his partner does things and the joy it brings him. He repeats, "The way you do the things you do," several times, with added variation and emotion each time.

Overall, "You Do" is a catchy and upbeat song that honors the joy and beauty of love. It encourages listeners to appreciate and celebrate their partners' unique qualities and to see them as an endless source of inspiration and delight. The lyrics use imaginative comparisons and metaphors to convey this message, making the song both fun and meaningful.

Butler is one of those guitarists that influences me, inspite of the fact i only have the first two Suede albums. He has this carefully crafted style where he writes counter melodies to what the bass and vocals are doing that just fits, when it shouldn't!

Brilliant - sad but love how it builds up and up and to see Bernard get into his guitar. David's voice is sighhhhhhhhhhh amazing:-)

Gorgeous. Of course, the song was shortened for commercial reasons, but the full-length version on the their 1997 album was perfect. Never mind. I've got the CD for that!
