Sister Surround
The Soundtrack of Our Lives Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're a rhyme without a reason
And you know it so well
Who's the king of the season
Well you never can tell
Though it's so plain to see
You think you like to be normal
You think you're in control
But the action you take only makes you small
Just like the way it should be

Ref:
Surround sister take care of me
Surround sister take care of me

You're a book out of nowhere
Being read all the time
And the things that you give me
Only shows that your blind
And when you know it's all over
And you're goin' insane
I'm just there to remind you that I can't feel no pain
Why don't you let it be

Ref:
Surround sister take care of me
Surround sister take care of me

Surround sister
Cause I'm not afraid to fall

No I'm not afraid to fall
I'm not afraid at all

Surround sister take care of me
Surround sister take care of me

Surround sister

Cause I'm not afraid to fall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Sister Surround" by The Soundtrack of Our Lives seem to speak directly to someone who is living their life without any real direction or reason, just going through their days without a sense of purpose. The opening lines set the tone, as they describe the person as "a rhyme without a reason," suggesting that they have a certain rhythm or pattern to their life, but no underlying motivation or goal. The next couplet then highlights the idea that the person may have a desire to be recognized or acknowledged as important, but that their place in the larger scheme of things is ultimately unknowable.

As the song progresses, the singer repeats the refrain "Surround sister take care of me," which could be interpreted in a few different ways. On one hand, it could be seen as a call for help or support, as though the singer is reaching out to someone they trust or depend on to help them navigate through difficult times. On the other hand, it could also be read as a declaration of trust or loyalty to someone, almost like a shorthand for "I trust you to have my back." Whatever the interpretation, the phrase is repeated several times throughout the song, giving it a kind of mantra-like quality.

The verses that follow continue to explore the theme of uncertainty and aimlessness, with imagery that liken the person to "a book out of nowhere" that is being read by others, but which doesn't have any real substance or meaning. The chorus repeats again and again, driving home the idea that the singer is seeking some kind of protection, some kind of shelter from the storm of life.

Overall, the lyrics to "Sister Surround" seem to be about the central conflict of modern life, the struggle to find meaning and purpose in an often chaotic and overwhelming world. The singer is asking for help and support, but at the same time, they are also asserting their own independence and willingness to take risks. While there may be no clear answers or solutions to the problems they face, the singer still has faith that they can navigate through them and come out stronger on the other side.

@miracleofsound

awesome band!

@ErichVonNasty

I found a ticket stub from 2003 Vancouver. BC this afternoon. It was such a great show and Randy Bachman from BTO joined TSOOL for a great rendition of “taking care of business”.

I wish they’d “broken” in North America.

@porkyrinds3497

Perhaps one of the best pure songs ever. I never get tired of hearing it. Thanks TSOOL.

@kab1159

A highly underrated and under appreciated song. I had the pleasure of seeing this band live in a small venue in Columbus, OH many years ago. The energy level was off the charts. So glad that I got to see this song performed live. What a night that was.
