Stormy Weather
The Spaniels Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky, stormy weather
Since my gal and I ain't together, keeps raining all the time
Life is bare, gloom and misery everywhere, stormy weather
Just can't get my poor old self together
I'm weary all the time, the time
So weary all the time

When she went away the blues walked in and they met me
If she stays away, that old rocking chair's gonna get me
All I do is pray the Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more

Can't go on, everything I had is gone, stormy weather
Since my gal and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
Keeps raining all the time

(When she went away the blues walked in and they met me
If she stays away, that old rocking chair's will get me
All I do is pray the Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more)

Can't go on, everything I had is gone, stormy weather
Since my gal and I ain't together

Keeps raining all the time, the time
Keeps raining all the time

Overall Meaning

The Spaniels' song "Stormy Weather" is a classic example of blues music that portrays the feelings of a man who cannot handle the stormy weather in his life. The first verse speaks of the gloom and misery that takes over the singer's life since his gal and he aren't together anymore. He feels so hopeless and lost, that it seems like it's raining all the time. The feeling of being unorganized and out of sync with himself continues in the second verse. The blues walk in, and he cannot stop them. The old rocking chair in which he used to cherish his moments with his gal is now threatening to take him down.

The singer pleads to the Lord to let him walk in the sun again. The chorus speaks of how everything he has had is gone and that he now struggles to continue. The rain just won't stop, and all he can do is lament over the lost love. The song captures the essence of the blues, portraying the feeling of love lost, hopelessness, and prolonged distress.

Without a doubt, the best version of this song! One of the underrated doo wop groups of the 50's. Check out their song from 1953 "Baby It's You".

Kenneth Green. You got it right all the way. Despite some of the not so nice things that were happening it was still a great time to be growing up. I sure miss these old days.
