International Jet Set
The Specials Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Good evening ladies and gentlemen
This is your captain speaking
Welcome aboard DC-10 flight number 1313
We will be cruising at a height of twenty five thousand feet at an air speed of sixty hundred miles per hour
Headphones will be provided by request for a varied program of in flight music
Have a good flight

Safety belts and sickness bags, jet lag downer pills
Duty free booze and fags make me feel ill
A vapor trail from A to B, away from normal sanity
It all seems so absurd to me

I've seen the carpets on the walls of hotels rooms around the world
I never want to hear the screams of the teenage girls in other peoples dreams

Spread the disease, from the south China sea
To the beach hotel Malibu
Phone my girlfriend to ask her "How's her weekend?"
I say "Hi, Terry here", and she says "Terry who, the hell are you?"

The businessmen are having fun are they on a different plane to me
I've lost touch with reality, they all seem so absurd to me
Like well dressed chimpanzees

Spend and spend and spend and spend
Will the muzak never end?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking
Due to expected engine failures we will be forced to attempt an emergency landing
Please remain seated, extinguish all cigarettes, and fasten safety belts
Follow the emergency procedures laid out in the pamphlet located in front of your seats
For normal breathing, oxygen masks will be released from the compartment above your head

Please remain calm and follow the instructions of your stewardess at all times
This is a recording

Overall Meaning

The Specials’ song “International Jet Set” satirizes the lifestyle of wealthy businessmen who fly around the world on private jets and stay in luxury hotels. The song begins with the announcement from the captain of the next flight. Then, the lyrics describe the experience of being a passenger on this flight, exposing the excesses that are ubiquitous at this level of travel. The song highlights the contrast between the glitz and glamour of the wealthy businessmen and the boredom and disillusionment of the singer.

The pre-chorus of the song talks about the singer’s experience of traveling with all the amenities provided by the airlines, but all they do is to make him feel ill. The bridge of the song expresses the singer’s disillusionment with the world he sees while traveling, as he has seen the carpets on the walls of hotel rooms around the world and doesn’t want to hear the screams of the teenage girls in other people's dreams. He further wonders what the businessmen find so amusing as they seem “absurd” to him.

“International Jet Set” is an important commentary on the excesses of the capitalist business world. The song’s mocking tone and satirical lyrics are meant to provoke listeners into thinking critically about issues such as consumerism, capitalism, and excess. The song suggests that the jet-setting culture can be unhealthy for individuals and the society as a whole.

People of today, born after the 80s, have NO IDEA of the cultural importance Two Tone and The Specials, The Beat, The Selecter et al had on the social and cultural impact of Britain.
Blacks and whites didn’t integrate fully in music until these guys came along and normalised it. The Specials are one of the greatest-and IMPORTANT bands this country has ever produced! I love these guys

@Teapot-Dave

I saw them live at De Montfort Hall in Leicester in 1979 with Madness and The Selector on the same bill. Just a brilliant night!
The only other multiracial bands that spring to mind from the pre Two-Tone days are Blue Mink and The Equals from the late 1960s and Hot Chocolate. There must be a few others, but these were the stand-out groups of the day.

@bendover3979

You hate us as a people but love our music, the way we dress, food, and music.

@SC1W

@Ben Dover Who the fuck are you talking to, you stupid prick?
I’m black!! And I was black before you were even fucking born!! Stupid bastard!!
